“We Have More In Common With Mushrooms Than You Think”: – Neil deGrasse Tyson Leaves Joe Rogan Dumbfounded

Neil deGrasse Tyson was Joe Rogan’s guest on his podcast, “The Joe Rogan Experience.”

Tyson, an American astrophysicist, author, and science communicator, shared one thing that keeps him up at night, leaving Rogan speechless.

On his TikTok, the famed astrophysicist, known for bringing science to the masses, shared the clip captioned, “We have more in common with mushrooms than you think.”

With his 4.8 million followers, it is no wonder that the clip quickly went viral. The comment section was on fire, with many making fun of the host.

One user wrote, “This is why I love Neil. He makes science understandable for everyone, even Joe Rogan.”

Another shared, “Joe Rogan had no idea what he was talking about during this whole interview, and it’s awesome.”

Others made fun of how Rogan tried to follow Tyson, “It’s like Neil is talking to a little kid who’s doing their darndest to be a part of the conversation. “Mushrooms breathe air” aww, yes, they do, Joe.”

Another echoed, “Joe tryna act like he understands.”

Others had questions about the topic and were not afraid of cracking jokes, “so we may belong in spaghetti sauce?”

Some were making wordplay, “Are you saying I’m a… Fun-Guy?” And others simply downplayed Tyson’s statement by writing, “why would you lose sleep over that?”

In the clip, Neil deGrasse Tyson explained, “the common ancestor between humans and mushrooms split later than its common ancestors split with green plants.”

Tyson added, “What that means is we and mushrooms are more alike than others we and mushrooms are to green plants.”

Then Rogan commented on how mushrooms breathe oxygen.

Tyson turned this into a joke, saying no one accused kale of tasting meaty, unlike mushrooms.

Animals and fungi shared a common ancestor and branched away from plants around 1.1 billion years ago. These are relatively new discoveries that were only confirmed in the mid-90s. That’s why a mushroom is not a vegetable, and if you did not know that, don’t feel bad.

Later on, Rogan tried to convince Tyson, the Hayden Planetarium’s director, to try magic mushrooms.

Tyson’s TikTok has nearly 10 million views and nearly two million likes.
