Autumn Carver was about to give birth to her third child. However, hers and her family’s world turned upside down after the pregnant mom and wife tested positive for Coronavirus in August 2021.
The mom suffered three miscarriages and did not want to risk another with the Covid-19 vaccine.
Autumn ended up in a hospital

Autumn was hospitalized on August 25, only weeks before CDC strongly recommended that pregnant women get the life-saving shot. Her husband’s diagnosis was mild, so he took care of their children.
Carver ends up on an oxygen machine

Soon after giving birth, the mom ended up on an extracorporeal membrane oxygenation machine. Covid almost destroyed her body, and the new mom fought for her life. ECMO has reduced the death rate from 59-71% to 49% since 2020.
Emergency C-section

The mother of three had to give birth via C-section in the 33rd week of her pregnancy. Luckily, the baby boy named Huxley was born healthy, but it would be months before his mom got to hold him. The baby was born on August 27.
Her husband never left her side or their baby

Zach Carver never lost faith that he would see his wife healthy and happy again. However, the worst day of his life was when he learned that Autumn “had zero percent chance of survival.”
Zach’s faith was strong

The husband turned to prayer and asked others on a Facebook support group to do the same.
Two months later, Autumn was to receive a lung transplant

Autumn was transferred from IU Health Methodist Hospital in Indianapolis to Northwestern Memorial in Chicago. People magazine talked to Dr. Ankit Bharat, chief of thoracic surgery.
The doctor was extremely worried

“When we took on Autumn, the probability was pretty low that she would get better because she had been on the ventilator and ECMO for an extended period.”
The mom’s chances were less than 5%

The doctor explained, “If you need ECMO for over a month, your probability of coming off without something like a lung transplant is less than 5 percent.”
The doctor wanted to try something

Yet, the doctor also believed that the mom, who was 34 then, had a fighting chance. She made adjustments to her ECMO and postponed her lung transplant.
Autumn made progress

Zach shared an exciting update, “A surprise conversation with a doctor this morning brought us out of Isolation and a plan for Autumn to meet Huxley.”
The mom was unable to speak

Zach added they were told, “Autumn Carver’s tracheotomy would be switched out to a smaller one so she could have a speaking device attached to it.”
On that day, Autumn got to hold Huxley for the first time

On October 19, with the help of her loved ones, the new mom held her baby for the first time. Zach wrote, “At 3 pm today, she met our son, and it was an amazing moment, needless to say.”
Out of the ICU

The good news continued into November when Zach announced that his wife had finally been released from the hospital’s ICU and was removed from her feeding tube. Autumn was transferred to Shirley Ryan AbilityLab, where her focus was regaining strength and mobility.
Kids missed their mom

Talking to People, the mom of three said, “I tried to ask Sadie, who is 4, what she wanted for Christmas, and bless her little heart, the only thing she could come up with is that she wanted mommy to come home.”
And Sadie’s wishes came true.

The mom’s recovery surprised even the doctors

Autumn was allowed to leave the hospital after 99 days. Her lungs were at 40% capacity, and she had nerve damage in her leg. Doctor Bharat was on GMA saying, “I think using the word ‘miraculous’ is very appropriate.”
A new chance at life

The mom of three knows that her organism went through hell and back, and she is immensely grateful. Her husband told NBC News that his answers were answered.
When the power of love and medicine meet

Bharat said, “She’s not going to get her lung function back to where it was before COVID hit her, but she’ll be able to lead a normal life.”
Autumn’s powerful message

Autumn shared an important message: “Life is too short, so just be kind to people. You never know what people are going through. That was my biggest takeaway before and feels even more appropriate now to say.”
