After the California governor called DeSantis a “small, pathetic man,” a conservative columnist claimed the Florida governor was after Trump’s supporters despite denials from the DeSantis office.
Newsom goes after DeSantis
According to Forbes, the governor of California branded DeSantis a “small, pathetic man” for allegedly sending migrants on a plane from Florida to Sacramento.
The investigation is in place
California’s Attorney General Rob Bonta suggested the alleged move was illegal, adding that the state is “investigating the circumstances by which these individuals were brought to California.”
Bonta’s allegations
California’s Attorney General said, “We are evaluating potential criminal or civil action against those who transported or arranged for the transport of these vulnerable immigrants.” He continued, “While this is still under investigation, we can confirm these individuals were in possession of documentation purporting to be from the government of the State of Florida.”
Immoral and disgusting
“I want to say this very clearly: State-sanctioned kidnapping is not a public policy choice, it is immoral and disgusting.”
Going after the “nutball right”
The Bulwark columnist Tim Miller shared his views on DeSantis’ campaign and noted that the Florida governor was going after Trump’s “nutball right.” Miller asked, “How catastrophic would the staffing of a second Trump administration be?”
The columnist laid out all the crucial questions
Miller continued, “Would Kari Lake be VP? Might lunatic cult leader Mike Flynn control the military? Would Trump try to terminate the Constitution? Side with Putin in Ukraine? Similarly, the known unknowns for DeSantis tend to point in a less catastrophic direction. Would RD move to the center in a general election? (I don’t think so). Hire a more competent staff? (Certainly.) Is his personality less likely to inspire a rabid, violent death cult? (Clearly.)”
The columnist had one thrilling outtake
The columnist spared no one feelings as he said, “If someone is aspiring to the presidency and their critical takeaways regarding the Trump administration are that Trump was too deferential to experts on COVID, too anxious to distribute a life-saving vaccine, not harsh enough on immigrants who were brought here as children, too adversarial to the prison-industrial complex, and not passionate enough about the need for a rhetorical attack on the ‘woke left,’ well, then you are going to have to forgive me if I come to the conclusion that you are a deranged lunatic.”
Miller held no prisoners
The columnist added, “And yet there is a category of DeSantis supporters who become incandescent with rage at any suggestion that their guy might be worse than Trump in certain ways.”
“Trying to out-MAGA Trump”
The past few days were not great for DeSantis’ campaign, and Sarah Longwell, the founder of the Republican Accountability Project, a Republican group critical of Trump, also shared her criticism, saying, “By trying to out-MAGA Trump, DeSantis is very much in danger that he finds himself in the same category as Trump.”
Swing voters and DeSantis
As Longwell explained, swing voters will not like “a six-week abortion ban, and who will not like his unrelenting focus” regarding culture wars. Chris Wilson, a Republican pollster who supports DeSantis, defended the Florida governor, ” his record and results on the economy, on education, and on just running a competent and efficient government without the runaway spending and inflation of the Biden years appeal to swing voters.”
The problem might be in the education
One of the burning issues for DeSantis will be trying to explain all the bills he signed regarding education in Florida. Banning women’s studies, erasing genders, the LGBTQ community, removing parts of history, and teachers leaving the state might leave swing voters wondering, it might leave swing voters not asking what Biden has done with power but what DeSantis would do with it.
