Teen Gets Kicked Off Plane After Making Rude Comments About “Obese Man” Sitting Next to Him, Wonders If He Did Anything Wrong

An 18-year-old guy insulted an obese passenger who sat next to him and the staff on the plane. But was he wrong? A young man took to Reddit to explain what had happened and asked the subreddit AITA if he was in the wrong.

The guy shared that he was on his second connecting flight home. One on the plane, he “had the delightful sight of an obese man taking up a good chunk of my seat.”

He called the flight attendant

Once the flight attendant arrived, he asked how his seat was available. She said, “The seat was paid for by this person, and the flight was full.”

The “obese” man bought two tickets

In the comments, the teen shared, “He did pay for two seats, the flight attendant told me that and that my purchase was in the same seat he did.”

The teen continued taunting the flight attendant

The teenager asked the flight attendant how the seat was “available if it was being used for someone’s literal rolls?” The flight attendant called him “rude” and kicked him out of the plane.

The obese man heard everything

The man next to the teen called him “fatphobic” while other passengers gave him the “stink eye.”

Temporary ban

The teen later received “a letter of complaint that I got appealed, and the consequences in the complaint (being a temporary ban) were removed less than an hour later.”

He continued traveling the following day

Due to things being resolved so quickly, the man was able to fly “the next day,” which prompted him to ask if he was in the wrong.

Reddit users made up their minds

The highlighted answer read, “Often it’s not what we say, it’s how we say it.” It continued, “It probably would’ve been handled very differently if you had handled it differently.” The poster said the man was TA (the ..hole), adding, “I know air travel can make people turn into idiots, so please, everyone, don’t be that idiot.”

Many echoed this response

Another person shared, “He would have likely gotten a very different response had he quietly approached a flight attendant to explain the situation and politely ask for a resolution.”

People felt bad for the other man

As a Reddit poster explained, “The poor man knew you were complaining about him tells me you were loud and rude.” They asked, “You are also fatphobic. How do you know there wasn’t a medical issue causing him to be larger?”

Many called him out for being judgmental

Another person said, “It’s not the fat person’s problem that the airline has small seats, and it’s not for you to judge why someone might be fat.” Someone shared, “You did not need to insult the man right next to you and the airline just to get your point across. All of that makes you TA.”

Sarcastic replies were welcomed

A Reddit poster chimed in, “It’s possible you’re the only person in the world ever to have had a bad experience flying.” Another shaded the teen, “He should probably take his OWN private jet next time. Since he’s SO IMPORTANT.”

Many think his attitude was an issue

As one person described, “If someone occupied more than one seat, they should buy two seats. For those who tried to guilt trip you into tolerating it, they’re welcome to switch seats with you. YTA for making personal attacks.”

Some pointed out that the teen must have been extra rude

A Reddit poster shared, “They don’t kick people off flights unless there’s serious bad behavior.” Another had some advice, “It’s an international flight. They are always uncomfortable. Next time book an exit row or business class if you want space.”
