Many teachers and parents of deep red Hernando County expressed their fury over culture wars, and one school board meeting brought participants to the edge of hysteria.
Teachers are scared
The Washington Post wrote an op-ed citing several educators, including social studies teacher Victoria Hunt. Hunt told the board, “I have never seen such fear from my colleagues as I have seen in the last two months.”
Investigation over a Disney movie
The threats and intimidation started after a local teacher, Jenna Barbee, showed her students a Disney movie, Strange World.” The educator said, “I am the teacher that’s under investigation with the Florida Department of Education for indoctrination for showing a Disney movie,” she said on TikTok.
Shredding MAGA delusion
Alyssa Marano, a former local math teacher who recently resigned, shredded MAGA activists for accusing her of “indoctrinating” children.
Teachers are done
She proclaimed, “No one is teaching your kids to be gay!” Adding, “Sometimes, they just are gay. I have math to teach. I literally don’t have time to teach your kids to be gay.”
Teachers are planning to resign
Around 50 teachers are planning their escape, and parents and students are joining their fight. One student said, “War on woke? More like the war on your children’s future.”
DeSantis was beloved in this county
The county hasn’t voted for Democrats in decades. However, things are changing dramatically, and Daniel Scott, a local teacher, told the board, “I don’t feel that I can adequately provide a safe environment for my students anymore.”
“Draconian working conditions”
Scott said he was condemning the “draconian working conditions that are causing many such as myself to abandon this honored career.”
Restrictive teaching
Lisa Masserio, president of the teachers union in Hernando County, told the Washington Post, “There is increased pressure and scrutiny on an already difficult job.”
Moms for Liberty member was unbothered
One of the parents at the meeting was Shannon Rodriguez from Moms For Liberty. She insisted on fighting “woke ideologies,” boycotting Disney or Bud Light, as another parent shouted, “You have awakened the entire alpha male blood of this country!”
Students are raising their voices
A student said, “It’s me and my fellow students who are feeling the effects of this.” Another added that banning books is what truly means “indoctrinating students.”
Moms for Liberty liberated liberal moms
The movement, tied to the far right, sparked better and bigger involvement of other mothers, especially among liberals. They fired back as “nine Democratic governors representing nearly 9 million students have sent a letter to leading textbook companies condemning ‘the negative impact that censorship and book-banning have on this nation’s students.'”
DeSantis will have to talk about it on a national level
Since the start of his campaign, DeSantis managed to overlook questions regarding abortion and kept things simple by going after Disney and Trump. That will have to change.
The heat is on
DeSantis also stopped funding DEI college programs and deleted the existence of racial discrimination and the LGBTQ community. With GOP preliminary debates approaching, there will be questions because not all Republicans are far-right oriented.
