Democratic representative Stacey Plaskett pointed out the hypocrisy during the House subcommittee investigation into the weaponization of government. Plaskett called out Jim Jordan and reminded him of Trump’s recent comments about using the DOJ for revenge.
The distraction
Plaskett, a Democrat representing the Virgin Islands, said, “They want to distract from the actual threat of the weaponization of government on the American people. That is Donald Trump.” She also accused the GOP of attempting to “ramp up their own misinformation campaign before the 2024 election.”
The Democrat vs. Trump
The Virgin Islands lawmaker then shared how Trump “has vowed to use the Department of Justice to investigate his political enemies. He has said that those who oppose him should be executed for treason. He has called his political opponents cockroaches vermin and said that immigrants are poisoning American society.’
Shielding Trump
Plaskett continued, “Every American should be outraged at this committee by not having hearings on that.” She added, “Many want to shield a man who, as many experts have identified, is spouting rhetoric cribbed from the Nazi regime, calling his enemies cockroaches and vermin, saying that those who oppose him are poisoning the blood of America, and even calling for the execution of people who simply speak out against him.”
Plaskett had more to add
The lawmaker continued talking about Trump and said, “He has vowed to use the DOJ to investigate his political enemies. As the first branch of government, it is our job to be a check on that kind of undemocratic, unstable rhetoric in this Republic.” In the meantime, Republican lawmaker Jim Jordan continued attacking the Biden administration.
Plaskett responded to Jordan’s claims
Jordan said, “The Biden White House worked to censor American speech with the help of Big Tech.” He added, “The Committees will continue their critical investigative work to protect Americans’ First Amendment rights and put an end to the vast government censorship enterprise.”
Trump’s recent statements
Trump told his supporters that under him, the DOJ would investigate “every Marxist prosecutor in America.” He also shared he would “root out … the radical-left thugs that live like vermin within the confines of our country.” Steven Levitsky, professor and co-author of “How Democracies Die,” commented, “This is one of the most openly authoritarian campaigns I’ve ever seen. You have to go back to the far-right authoritarians in the 1930s in Europe or 1970s Latin America to find the kind of dehumanizing and violent language that Trump is starting to consistently use.”
