Clay Higgins seemingly made a threat to special counsel Jack Smith while on Newsmax. But a Louisiana Republican is now facing backlash.
Higgins responded to Smith’s warrant for Trump’s Twitter logs
While discussing Smith’s warrant for Trump’s Twitter account, Higgins said, “I consider it to be a badge of honor to be on another one of Jack Smith’s lists, so I just say that his days are numbered.” This remark was based on the fact that the warrant includes interactions with Trump, as it requested information about “all users who have followed, unfollowed, muted, unmuted, blocked, or unblocked” Trump’s account.
Higgins had more to say
The GOP lawmaker continued, “American patriots are not going to stand idly by, good sir, and allow our republic to dissolve. We are prepared to fight legally and peacefully and within the parameters of the Constitution with every ounce of our might.” While Higgins used the term “peacefully,” many were alarmed.
The backlash on X
X users expressed their concerns. Political commentator Russell Drew wrote, “This sounds like a threat. This could be Clay Higgins just Higginsing again, but the FBI might want to talk with him this week.” Dennis Herring said, “It’s beneath you to threaten the Special Counsel, @RepClayHiggins. I mean, I hope it is.” But, the backlash soon went from X to other social media platforms.
Reddit spoke up
One Reddit user stated, “Clay Higgins…. this is the same dude that claimed in a congressional hearing that the FBI orchestrated January 6th and bussed in secret operatives.” Higgins faced Federal Bureau of Investigations Director Christopher Wray and told him, “Your day is coming.”
More people were not amused
Another Reddit poster shared, “Every statement from Republicans should be viewed as an imminent threat and treated accordingly. Lock this guy up.” In response, a person added, “Republicans have already shown multiple times they will attempt to carry out threats.”
Many people are tired
Someone said, “Remove him from office immediately by virtue of the 14th Amendment. Sick and tired of seeing these insurrectionists still holding office.” Another simply stated, “Threatening a prosecutor: Never a winning move.” This person wondered, “Why is it that Republicans sound more like Vladimir Putin than Putin himself does?”
Higgins physically removed an activist from a press conference
Earlier in 2023, a video showed the congressman physically removing a Medicare activist from a press conference while in the presence of Republican representatives Paul Gosar and Lauren Boebert. Retired U.S. Army General Mark Hertling replied to a video clip of the incident, saying he once “fired a junior officer for assaulting a soldier” and called for Higgins to be charged. Others echoed this sentiment, asking for the GOP member to face legal consequences.
