Chris Christie issued an ominous warning for Republicans weeks before the GOP primaries. The former New Jersey Governor said that nominating Trump would be a “death sentence” for the party and had some words of wisdom for Nikki Haley.
Christie made himself quite clear
NewsNation host Chris Cuomo asked the presidential hopeful if the “death sentence” in the primaries would be going after Trump, as Christie did. Christie responded, “No, the death sentence is to let Trump be our nominee.” The ex-New Jersey Governor also called Trump a “political poison.”
Christie’s explanation
Christie continued, If Trump is our nominee, we will not only lose the presidency again, but we will lose both houses of Congress, and we will lose races up and down the ticket.” The former Republican governor added. “And this isn’t speculation.”
Trump’s followed by “chaos and drama”
The Republican wondered, “If you are unwilling to take him on now, if you eventually get on the stage with him, how are you willing to take him on or able to take him on with any credibility when you’ve said things, you know, ‘For some reason, chaos and drama follows him wherever he goes.'” Christie referred to Nikki Haley’s comments from a Fox News interview, where she said about Trump, “The problem is drama and chaos follows him, whether fairly or not. It is constantly following him, and Americans feel it.”
Christie is also not a Haley fan
When you’re unwilling to stand up and talk about the guy who is the frontrunner in the race by 20 to 30 points, depending on what poll you look at, Chris, you’re not trying to win,” Christie said, adding, “You’re trying to come in second. I’m running to win, and I think our party needs Donald Trump to lose for us to have a future in the 2024 race.”
Christie urged Haley to speak up
Christie said at a New Hampshire event, “I just said his name out loud, and lighting did not strike me. I did not fall dead of a heart attack. I have not been poisoned by a member of his staff. But you would think when you look at the rest of the folks in this race that they fear that’s what would happen if they said his name.” He repeated Haley’s “chaos and drama” remark and added, “He’s not Voldemort from the ‘Harry Potter’ books. He’s not ‘he who shall not be named.”
Haley does not want to “offend people”
“She doesn’t want to offend people who have supported Donald Trump,” Christie said, and continued, “So she says things like in South Carolina three days ago, that he was the right president at the right time. But for some reason, drama and chaos follow him wherever he goes, as if he is an innocent victim.”
