How far will one go to justify another mass shooting in Texas? Texas State Representative Keith Self enranged people after declaring that “an almighty god who is absolutely in control of our lives.” But he did not stop there.
The claims came after a mass shooter killed eight people
A shooter opened fire in a mall in Allen, Texas. The now-dead shooter killed eight, including a five-year-old child. Texas officials almost always use prayers, but this time, things went even further.
The shooter had AR-15 style weapon
The mass shooter held AR-15 style weapon, one of the most commonly used in recent mass shootings. Representative Jared Moskowitz told Marjorie Taylor Greene, “You know why you don’t hunt with an AR-15 with a deer? Because there’s nothing left.” The same style of weapon was used in the Uvalde massacre.
Self is representative of the district
CNN interviewed Self, a Republican congressman whose district includes Allen, who said the mall shooting could have been worse without the quick response to the gunfire.
The reporter asked a valid question
CNN’s Paula Reid asked, “Many people argue that prayers aren’t cutting it, prayers are not preventing the next mass shooting. What is your response to that criticism?”
The answer shocked people
Self shared, “Those are people that don’t believe in an almighty God who, who has, who is absolutely in control of our lives.” He concluded, “Prayer is powerful in the lives of those people that are devastated.”
So much for the solution
The congressman said, “Today, we should be focused on the families.” But he continued, “I know people want to make this political, but prayers are important, and they are powerful in the families who are devastated right now.”
This only raised more questions
Clearly, trying to stay out of gun control conversations, Self enraged millions. One person shared on Reddit, “God’s will? I have heard that awful excuse to justify genocide, war crimes, and dictatorships. The GOP is abhorrent.”
People were baffled
Another Reddit user asked, “So he is saying god wanted them to die?” Someone said, “I don’t like the sound of this almighty God that allows five-year-olds to be killed while she is out shopping with her family.”
Some shared valuable insight
A person wrote, “If god is in absolute control of their lives, then they should have no issues with how democrats want to run things because it is actually god that is controlling them after all!”
What’s the point?
Another person pointed out, “If God is totally in control of our lives, what do we need Texas congressmen for?”
Ted Cruz was also praying
Senator Cruz shared on Twitter, “Heidi and I are praying for the families of the victims of the horrific mall shooting in Allen, Texas. We pray also for the broader Collin County community that’s in shock from this tragedy.”
Roland Gutierrez was angered
Gutierrez wrote on Twitter, “There is a special place in hell for people who watch all this happen and choose to do nothing.” The Democrat is ready to talk about gun control.
Texas laws make things worse
In 2021, legislation was passed allowing Texans who legally own a firearm to carry it publicly without obtaining a permit or training. However, a 2022 study found that states with weaker gun laws have higher rates of gun deaths, including homicides and suicides.
Marjorie Taylor Greene chimed in
In her pro-gun manner, the Georgia representative partly shared, “We need to study SSRIs and other factors that cause mass shootings.” Guns?
She also offered prayers
Of course, she offered prayers and thanked God “for the brave officer that courageously ran into the line of fire to save others.”
