San Antonio Democrat Senator Roland Gutierrez was visibly angered and upset over the Texas mall shooting, which took eight innocent lives. The Democrat, who will likely challenge Ted Cruz, shared that those who oppose gun control can “go to hell.”
The Senator repeated the statement twice
In a TV interview for MSNBC, Gutierrez said, “There is a special place in hell even for people that have this kind of problem staring them square in the face and have done nothing about it. I don’t care about their thoughts, and I don’t care about their prayers.”
He recounted on Twitter
On social media, the Democrat posted a link citing Greg Abbot and Lieutenant Governor Dan Patrick with a caption, “There is a special place in hell for people who watch all this happen and choose to do nothing.”
Thoughts and prayers are not enough
Gutierrez said in an interview, “This Governor and this lieutenant governor, I’m sorry, but they can go to hell. I am tired of these people saying this stuff and doing nothing.”
California Governor also called out Abbott
California Governor Gavin Newsom tweeted, “This is your reminder that Aboott cut $211 million in mental health funding.”
The tweet challenged other Republicans
Marjorie Taylor Greene did not mention guns, but she wanted to know more about the side effects of antidepressants and the nation’s mental health.

Abbott blames “anger”
In his interview, Abbot shared, “One thing that we can observe very easily is that there has been a dramatic increase in the amount of anger and violence that is taking place in America.”
He said Texas was working on causes
Abbot added, “What Texas is doing in a big-time way is we are working to address that anger and violence by going to its root cause, which is addressing mental health problems behind it.”
More people called out Abbott
“Right on cue, Republicans are blaming the latest gun massacres on mental health, instead of guns,” Lindy Li tweeted. The political strategist added, “Greg Abbott was the one who cut $211 MILLION in mental health funding 205 House Republicans voted AGAINST mental health services in schools. So don’t buy their b*.”
Abbott moved to the border issues
The Governor shared, “We don’t need 1,500 soldiers at the border, we need 15,000 or 150,000.” Talking to Fox News, Abbott did not mention other issues, including mass shootings, but instead slammed President Biden’s decision.
Roland Gutierrez reminded people of the Uvalde massacre
The Uvalde representative was on CNN and said, “We’re living in a Texas nightmare.” He added that “people really need to wake up to what’s happening here” regarding gun violence in America. Uvalde shooter, 18, took the lives of 19 children and two teachers.
Uvalde lawmaker compared the USA to Russia
Gutierrez shared, “We are in a situation in this state where we’re — as if you’re living in communist Russia. The Governor, the lieutenant governor, and people like them and their law enforcement agencies refuse to tell us the truth as to what’s going on here.”
The solution
Gutierrez proposed raising the minimum gun purchasing age to 21, intensifying background checks, and instituting a “red flag law” to remove guns from deranged individuals.
People support these measures
A recent Fox News poll found that around 80% of American voters agree with enforcing those measures. Still, Gutierrez faced backlash from Republicans, as one person tweeted, “Texans are not going to let people like you leave the border wide open and take protection from law-abiding citizens. You go ahead and talk your California politics, but Texas voters are not stupid.”
