Peggy Noonan, a columnist who wrote speeches for Reagan, spoke up about Trump’s charges and his “quiet” voters and wonders if the Republican party “changed its essential nature and meaning.”
Noonan calls Trump an “unstable element”
Noonan, who now works for the Wall Street Journal, and collaborates with NBC and ABC, stated at the beginning of her opinion piece, “Donald Trump is an unstable element inserted into an unsettled environment. Sooner or later, there will be a boom.”
Inside Trump’s mind
The columnist added how Trump has “poor impulse control” and “likes to start fights,” which is a weakness.
The severity of the indictment
Speaking about the indictment, Noonan says, “The federal criminal indictment charges Donald Trump with illegally keeping, hiding and showing to others national-security documents including information on U.S. nuclear programs, potential vulnerabilities of the U.S. and its allies to military attack, and plans for possible retaliation in response to a foreign attack.” She stated, “You can’t get more serious, more breathtaking, in a charge against a former president.”
Voters can no longer answer a question with a question
The columnist continued, “Deep down they know ‘What about Hillary?’ doesn’t answer the question: ‘Why would Trump do this? Why would he put America in danger? Who did he show those papers to?'”
The questions are piling up
She then asked more serious questions, “What were Mr. Trump’s motives? Why would he refuse to give the documents back, move them around Mar-a-Lago, and mislead his own lawyers about their status and content?”
What choosing Trump means for the Republicans
Noonan questions what would mean for the Republican party to once again choose Trump to represent them in the elections, writing, “Mr. Trump in 2024 it will mean it has changed its essential nature and meaning, and that it is split in a way that can’t be resolved by time.”
The columnist on national security
Noonan, a Republican, expressed her fears, “I fear that Mar-a-Lago is a nest of spies. Membership in the private club isn’t fully or deeply vetted; anyone who has the money can join.” She continued, “Mar-a-Lago isn’t secure. Those documents didn’t belong there. It is a danger to our country that they were. This story will do Mr. Trump no good with his supporters.”
Trump’s “quiet” supporters
While Trump’s numbers are high, Noonan believes that Trump will lose a good portion of his base. She writes, “It will hurt him—maybe not a lot but some, maybe not soon but in time. I mean the quiet Trump supporters, not big mouths and people making money on the game, but honest people.”
Trump’s vanity
Noonan firmly believes that behind Trump’s actions regarding the Mar-a-Lago case was his vanity. She writes, “Look at this handwritten letter. Kim Jong Un loves Trump. See who I was? Look at this invasion plan.”
A gentle reminder
She also explained, “The charges aren’t about press clippings, personal letters, and autographed photos of foreign leaders.”
The columnist and Trump have an interesting history
Noonan previously criticized Obama’s administration and wrote several pieces about the loyalty of Trump’s supporters, but then things changed.
Trump’s allegations
In 2019, Trump called her “simplistic,” claiming that she “is stuck in the past glory of Reagan, and in 2022, the former president said that the columnist was a “weak and frail RINO.”
