The Georgia firebrand, Marjorie Taylor Greene, posted on X a message about aid to Ukraine with a link to an outlet that was “sanctioned by the U.S. government as a propaganda arm of Russian Foreign Ministry that spreads disinformation.”
Greene’s X post
The Georgia Republican, author of MTG, a memoir, wrote on X, “Anyone who votes to fund Ukraine is funding the most corrupt money scheme of any foreign war in our country’s history. And forcing the American people to pay for it.” She then added a link to the article issued initially by The Islander and reposted by the Strategic Culture Foundation (SCF).
X users fact-checked Greene
The article said that Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky’s close allies bought two yachts and spent 75 million dollars on them in October 2023. It suggests that aid money was used for it. But X users swiftly added context, with one writing, “Burn! You got fact-checked. Of course, you would source it from a Russian foreign ministry that spreads misinformation.”
More posters came after Greene
Someone wrote, “The majority of Americans don’t want to pay your salary, yet here we are.” Another added, “Why is anyone taking this woman seriously? Can’t you see the whole Trump squad does nothing but this?” X’s context is “written by people who use X, and appears when rated helpful by others.”
Sanctions on the SCF
The outlet was sanctioned in 2021, and the disclaimer on X read, “The “journal” Rep. Taylor Green is linking to as a source has been sanctioned by the U.S. Government as a propaganda arm of Russian Foreign Ministry that spreads disinformation.” the Department of the Treasury’s statement said the publication “created false and unsubstantiated narratives concerning U.S. officials involved in the 2020 U.S. presidential election.”
Greene’s attacks on Ukraine aid
In a viral video, Greene claimed Putin never planned on invading Europe. Greene said, “I’ve never seen Putin actually show in any detail his plans to invade Europe. No one has shown me that.” Greene gave a “hard no” on two bills regarding Ukraine after ex-House Speaker Kevin McCarthy said he wanted to keep $300 million in aid.
Greene has been rather vocal
On X, she wrote, in part”, Voting yes on the rule means more money for Ukraine. It’s that simple. No one who wants peace should vote yes on the rule to advance the bills. That’s why I’m a HARD NO on the rules package and a blank check for Ukraine!” the Georgia lawmaker said during an interview in April, “Ukraine is not the 51st state.”
