Supporters of former president Trump expressed fury after a search warrant for Trump’s Twitter (now X) appeared. They cited a breach of free speech but even went as far as calling Smith the “enemy of the people.”
Court filing revealed what was inside the warrant
The warrant said, in part, “All information from the ‘Connect’ or ‘Notifications’ tab for the account, including all lists of Twitter users who have favorited or retweeted tweets posted by the account, as well as all tweets that include the username associated with the account (i.e., ‘mentions’ or ‘replies’).”
Many X users who interacted with Trump were enraged
Mollie Ziegler Hemingway, editor of The Federalist, shared on the platform, “As part of his war on Trump, Jack Smith collected info on any American who retweeted or favorited Trump tweets. This is such a dystopic nightmare, as is the way it’s calmly accepted by so much of the country.”
Breach of privacy
One person wrote, “This is a huge breach on our privacy, this is no longer democracy but an authoritarian dictatorship. There is an all-out assault on free speech and American rights and ideals.” Collin Rugg, the co-owner of the Trending Politics website, called special counsel Smith an “enemy of the people.”
X objected in the begging
The court fined the company for missing the deadline and appealed the fine, but the case was rejected. Trump also commented on the warrant, “How dare lowlife prosecutor, Deranged Jack Smith, break into my former Twitter account without informing me and, indeed, trying to completely hide this atrocity from me. What could he possibly find out that is not already known.”
Part of the D.C. case
The warrant was issued in a D.C. case, where Trump was charged with “conspiring to defraud the United States, conspiring to obstruct an official proceeding, obstructing a congressional proceeding, and conspiracy against rights.” The trial should start in March 2024.
Trump will have a busy year
The likely GOP presidential nominee will face federal and civil trials starting in March, though the Georgia case’s trial date has yet to be determined. The federal case regarding classified documents should start in May, though it will likely be pushed, while the NYC trial that includes alleged hush money payment to Stormy Daniels will begin in March.
