“Know the definition of words before using them”: Congressman Mark Takano Slams Republican Colleague

Congressman Mark Takano reintroduced the 32-hour Workweek Act to Congress. He also made noise with a sarcastic yet educational remark on Twitter regarding his Republican coworker.

Takano, who represents California’s 39th District, claims that the four-day workweek would “increase the happiness of humankind” and has studies to prove this.

Shorter Workweek For Better Productivity

This legislation was first introduced in 2021, but it failed.

However, after the UK completed a six months pilot program, it was reported that a shorter workweek came with improved productivity, revenue, morale, and team culture. Workers individuals saw benefits for their health, finances, and relationships.

Similarly, 33 businesses in the US and Ireland went to four workweek programs last year and are not planning to return to the previous model.

Who Is Mark Takano?

Takano spent over two decades teaching British literature in public schools. He became a member of the Democratic party in 1983, and he has actively been trying to improve the lives of people in California and the US.

Takano was the first non-white openly gay member of the House. During his recent trip to Japan, alongside other Congress members, Maxwell Alejandro Frost, Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez, Frank Pallone, and French Hill, Takano said:

“Japan is still, pretty much, I would say, a ‘Don’t Ask, Don’t Tell’ society, but unlike the United States, Japan as a whole does not have violent homophobia where people are beat up, or gay bashed or that kind of thing.”

The member of the US Congress met with the transgender activists. Takano continued, “There is harassment and bullying in the schools. People face discomfort in the workplace and … until now it’s not like a coming out kind of society, but it’s not a place where (homosexuality is) criminalized and people suffer violence.”

Know The Definition Before Using Words

The peace-loving educator who graduated from Harvard recently shook up Twitter after politely reminding his Republican colleague not to use the words if they don’t know their meaning.

He wrote, “To my Republican colleague – when I was a high school teacher, I always advised my students to know the definition of words before using them.”

The Four-Day Workweek Challenges

Though many support the four-day workweek, many still do not think the model is “one size fits all.”

But Takano is ready, as he claims that the next phase is to “get more and more people understanding the arguments for it, to bring in the business executives and the employees who’ve experienced positive effects of a shorter workweek, and begin to reduce the anxieties around change.”

He believes that the old model introduced decades ago needs to be revised in today’s world.

Takano also recognized that the new work model is highly adaptable for “white-collar professions.”

He added that his bill would “spur conversation about how we democratize this norm to other sectors of the workforce so everybody benefits.”

Do you think that Takano’s dream could soon become a reality?
