“Kentucky adds another law to keep its women barefoot and pregnant” – No puberty talks in Kentucky schools until sixth grade

A Kentucky child might be going through puberty, but unless they are in the sixth grade or above, they will not get any education about it. The law prohibits teaching about human sexuality, including discussing periods. SB bill includes bans for trans children.

Kentucky Education Commissioner explains the bill

Talking to WKYT, Jason Glass said, “Some students we know are undergoing, or they’re going through puberty in the fifth grade or some cases earlier. They won’t be able to receive any information from schools about that until the sixth grade.”

Supporting students without saying anything

Glass added that schools have to think about how to support and connect students with their peers and other sources to gain access to information.

No gender identity, gender expression, or orientation

Restrictions on transgender students include going to the bathrooms, as well as misgendering by the teachers. However, Glass stated, “In spite of the Legislature’s prohibitions on supporting LGBTQI+ students or transgender issues or issues around prohibitions around when certain concepts can be taught if at all those people exist in our society, there are legal issues around them.”

The challenges are scary

A member of the Berea Independent School Board, Rebecca Blankenship, is the first openly trans person in the office. Blankenship is hopeful that “parents will see what a real rejection of first amendment rights this represents.”

The issues caused anger among people

On Reddit, people are fuming, as one person shared, “Jesus, those kids are going to be such a freaking mess.” Another added, “Kentucky adds another law designed to keep its women barefoot and pregnant.”

Not teaching about something does not mean it’s not happening

A Reddit poster pointed out, “Not teaching kids about stuff does not prevent the stuff you don’t teach them about from actually happening. They’ll still go through puberty, they’ll still be LGBTQIA+, they’ll still live in a nation that was built on slaves and kept institutionalizing racism via legislation for generations after that.”

The period talk

One person shared, “A former partner of mine had to talk a terrified young woman through her first experience with menstruation. The poor woman literally thought she was dying. All because her mother was a fundamentalist and refused to discuss how a human body works.” They added, “This is the world Republicans want for our children!”

Some called out GOP in the worst way possible

Someone wrote, “Conservatives believe the only appropriate place for discussing puberty with young girls is with their 30+-year-old fiancĂ©e.” Another wondered, “Imagine thinking this is the solution to teen pregnancy and STI prevention. They know they’re like number 7 in the country for teen pregnancy rates, right?”

What’s the plan?

Some wondered, “We don’t teach kids about their bodies or sex so they can then get pregnant at an early age but will not be able to make a choice to keep a baby at a young age so that kid can grow up in an emotionally stunted household which will most likely cause this cycle of bulls-it to continue forever. Cool plan, republicans, cool plan.”

Kids will use the internet

In reply, a person said, “These Kentucky GOP morons are too stupid to understand that kids are just going to start googling ‘why am I bleeding from my cooter’ if they don’t teach them in advance.” Of course, children will use the internet, but will they know what to search for?

What’s wrong with periods and puberty?

A person stated: “There’s not even a benefit to not discussing puberty.” Someone asked, “Good grief America, what is wrong with you?!” In reply, a Reddit user wrote, “Religious 2nd amendment, Trump worshiping, anti-science weirdos.”
