“Florida is doing a speed run to a dystopian future..” – DeSantis’ Florida Deletes Race From The Rosa Parks Story

Ron DeSantis’ “Stop-Woke” apparently includes rewriting history, and one of the most famous Black women in modern America, Rosa Parks.

The Governor of Florida ensured to remove any reference to race, The New York Times reports.

The publication gave an example of how the well-known story went from “The law said African Americans had to give up their seats on the bus if a white person wanted to sit down” to “She was told to move to a different seat.”

This lesson from the fourth grade now does not mention race, but it simply states it was illegal for “men of certain groups” to be unemployed and for “certain groups of people” to do jury duty.

More gaps in Florida education

DeSantis, who is running for POTUS, previously commented that it’s “inappropriate” and “not true” to teach that America was built on stolen land. He also pushed for the so-called bill “Don’t Say Gay” to (allegedly) erase the LGBTQ community from the sunny state.

Further, a group of conservative Florida Citizens Alliance suggested there are too many slavery references in a book for fifth graders. Also, the eighth graders’ book had too many bad things happening to Native Americans.

These statements fall under recommendations, so it is unclear how much schools will have to adapt their lessons.

Former Students Slam DeSantis

DeSantis, a former high school teacher at the private boarding school, was accused by one of the students that he seemed keen to justify slavery while teaching about the Civil War, Times reports.

Danielle Pompey claimed, “Like in history class, he was trying to play devil’s advocate that the South had good reason to fight that war, to kill other people, over owning people—Black people.” Another former student, Gates Minis, remembered that DeSantis taught things that were straight-up factually inaccurate when it came to the Civil War.

Another unnamed student said DeSantis’ take on the Civil War was so bad that students made an ironic video about him for the yearbook.

Defunding colleges

Florida’s government announced plans to defund diversity, equity, and inclusion programs at every public college in the state.

A judge denied a request from Florida’s government to block an appeal against DeSantis’ “Stop-Woke” act in the state’s public colleges. But DeSantis’ administration rejected dozens of math books, saying they contained CRT. Another sensitive topic, naturally, is Critical Race Theory.

That is why it was unsurprising to learn that Florida stopped the College Board from testing a pilot Advanced Placement African American Studies (APAAS) in January.

The book telling Rosa Parks’ story is yet to be published, so this might not be the final version. But what you read is the updated version from the publisher, so things might only get worse.

Social media says Florida lives in a “dystopian future”

Comments on social media scrutinized DeSantis’ education reforms.

Reddit users were confused, as a person wrote, “So… was she told to sit in the back of the bus because she was female now?”

Another responded, “Can’t talk about her gender either.”

Someone joked, “No, she was told to sit in the back of the bus by the bus driver because the bus driver was woke.”

More people shared their thoughts, “That is some Putin level of disinformation going on. The story is completely pointless without the racial context.”

Another went even further: “Florida is doing a speed run to a dystopian future..”

Someone pointed out, “The idiots in Florida must have forgotten what it is like to be a young person who becomes aware that facts/knowledge are being withheld from them. And these young people have the internet.”

Another concluded, “Welcome to 1984. Orwell was right.”
