The override of Governor Laura Kelly’s veto of a transgender student-athlete ban led to more burning questions. Kansas lawmakers, led by Kansas House Speaker Daniel Hawkins, are accused of passing more than an anti-LGBTQ bill.
The viral response
The bill bans transgender girls from participating in women’s sports from kindergarten through college. Even more disturbingly, it includes requiring children to undergo genital examinations or providing a birth certificate to verify their gender.
Many are in disbelief
People started accusing Kansas Republicans across social media, with one Reddit user writing, “‘Stop s–ualizing children’ – proceeds to allow creepy coaches to stare at children’s genitalia under lawful protections.” Another echoed, “All these people are going full psycho pervert in the best-case scenario of finding out 0.6% of the population.”
Many survivors shared their thoughts
A person who survived child abuse wrote, “If they really wanted to protect children, they would abolish child marriage & end things like this. They are legalizing child exploitation & it is utterly despicable.”
This will more likely affect young girls
A Reddit user shared, “I guess it will mostly be the girls.. which serves their purpose.” Another wrote, “… after women worked so hard to get equity in school sports.”
Some asked why drag shows were banned
One said, “Republicans project it’s the drag shows grooming kids, then go and legalize fondling children.” They added this was on top of “legalizing” assaults and “inc.st babies” while “lowering the age of consent for minors.” Another added, “But they’re scared of drag queens reading fairy tales…”
Many mocked how Republicans always accuse Democrats of child abuse
A person stated, “Every Republican accusation is an admission of guilt.” Another echoed this opinion, “Isn’t it always the ones doing the accusing that are actually to blame for the crime?”
Just this week, Marjorie Taylor Green made similar accusations
A Reddit user shared, “Someone better tell MTG the ped.philes are calling from within the house.” Another was more to the point, “‘Democrats are the party of ped.philes.’-crazy Georgia woman.”
Some people refused to believe this was real
Several Reddit users asked for the proof, and one person responded, “I thought this was so ridiculous that it couldn’t be, but it is. You can see the vote yourself. It’s House Bill 2238.”
Others argued that these inspections are on paper only
The legislation straight up says that “challenges could require them to undergo genital inspections or require a birth certificate for proof of the child’s gender.” Some people want to believe it will not go that far.
People want to give Republicans a break but still want answers
One poster commented on the legislation, “Wow.. there is no way that will be abused!” Another shared, “It may be a little exaggerated.” The same person added, “The legislature is wasting the people’s time over literally ONE case.”
Many say this will lead to a significant setback for girls in sports
Someone shared, “Republicans don’t care about protecting kids. Just hurting LGBT people and women.” Another added, “This will drive female and female-identifying children not just out of sports but out of in-person education spaces.”
People are thinking of banning sports now
One parent wrote, “At this point, it’s safer for the kids if we just stop having sports in school.” Another stated, “I see Kansas schools, colleges, and universities dropping their entire women’s sports programs due to lack of applicants.”
