Former New Jersey governor Chris Christie gave an interesting insight into what makes the former president reluctant to participate in the upcoming Republican presidential debates. The Republican politician claims that Trump fears the debates “against people who are serious.”
Christie talked with Hugh Hewitt
The conservative host, Hugh Hewitt, and the Republican politician spoke about Donald Trump’s potential decision not to take part in the debates, something that is unprecedented in modern history.
Trump said he did not like the venues or the hosts
In his post on Truth Social, Trump said that he might skip Republican debates because he has a “massive” lead and was not happy about the choices of hosts and venues.
Christie has other ideas
Christie alleged that Trump was “afraid.” He told Hewitt, “He’s afraid to get on the stage against people who are serious. And I’m sorry to see that he’s that afraid of it.”
Numbers can change
The former New Jersey governor said Christie Trump is “’leading by seemingly insurmountable numbers’ and doesn’t want to subject himself to being ‘libeled and abused.'”
Good ideas could increase the numbers
The GOP politician further argued that if Trump had good ideas during debates, he would only increase his chances of winning. Hence, Christie concluded that Trump was afraid.
Challenging Trump
Christie further asked, “If he’s that afraid of that, how can we count on him to do any better with President Xi than the failures he had in his first term with China?”
And what about Russia?
He continued, “How can we expect him to do any better with Putin than having set the groundwork for the invasion of Ukraine, which his conduct towards Putin certainly helped to establish?”
That’s why Trump cannot be a president
Christie alleged that Trump “has no business being president” because he was scared of debating with Republicans. He also claims that the former president doesn’t want to partake because “he doesn’t have a lot of serious answers for the problems that are facing the country right now.”
The politician supported Trump
The former Trump supporter told the viewers, “I’m sorry to see that Donald Trump feels like if he gets on the stage, he’s at risk of losing his lead.”
Calling Trump a “child”
Christie concluded, “All he wants to do is go back and re-prosecute the 2020 election because his feelings are hurt.” He added, “He’s a child in that regard.”
Trump believes the opposite
Trump said to WABC, “I’m leading by 40 points. People don’t debate when they have these massive leads.”
Will Christie run for president?
The former New Jersey governor has branded himself as the only Republican willing and able to take down former President Donald Trump. He is about to announce his candidacy 2024 presidential bid Tuesday publicly.
He was already in the race
Christie last ran for president in 2016. However, he dropped out of the race after finishing in a disappointing sixth place during the New Hampshire primary.
Christie vs. DeSantis
Apart from Trump, the ex-governor also talked about Florida’s governor, Ron DeSantis. He said, “I don’t think Ron DeSantis is a conservative based on his actions towards Disney.”
The former governor wants more debates
Instead of avoiding them, Christie said, “There should be as many as we can have. They should be as open format as they can be to allow for follow-ups, to not allow people to give sound-bite-y answers that nobody believes will solve any problems.”
