Former congresswoman and long-time Republican Liz Cheney was a guest at “CBS News Sunday Morning,” where she expressed concerns over Trump’s reelection and shared her thoughts on House Speaker Johnson.
If Trump is re-elected
The host, John Dickerson, asked Cheney what would happen if Trump gets re-elected. The former Wyoming Congresswoman warned, “he told us what he’ll do.” She added how people “don’t fully understand the extent to which the Republicans in Congress today have been co-opted.” Then Cheney said that the U.S. “is a sort of a sleepwalking into dictatorship.”
Trump has “collaborators”
Cheney, the author of “Oath and Honor: A Memoir and a Warning,” also spoke about House Speaker Mike Johnson. The ex-GOP congresswoman mentioned Johnson in her book, writing, “He was playing bait and switch, assuring members that the brief made no claims about specific allegations of [electoral] fraud when, in fact, it was full of such claims.”
The story of Mike Johnson
She repeated to Dickerson that “the story of Mike Johnson is a story of, of a collaborator and of someone who knew then – and knows now – that what he’s doing and saying is wrong, but he’s willing to do it in an effort to please Donald Trump.”
Cheney called out the GOP’s “cowardice”
Cheney wrote in her book that Trump was “the most dangerous man ever to inhabit the Oval Office” and repeatedly warned of the danger that is the former president, saying, for example, “We cannot survive a president willing to terminate our Constitution.”
“The things we do for the Orange Jesus”
In excerpts obtained by CNN, Cheney wrote that most GOP members knew that the 2020 elections were lost but still signed their names on electoral vote objection sheets. One Republican Congressman, according to Cheney, said, “The things we do for the Orange Jesus.”
The book tells plenty about events leading up to January 6
For instance, Cheney tells a story of January 4, when she listened to some of Trump’s allies trying to allegedly overturn the elections by involving then Vice President Mike Pence. She was not the only one who worried if Pence could “withstand the pressure” from Trump. A day later, she got a message from former House Speaker Paul Ryan, “I worry he breaks but think he will not.”
Trump’s second impeachment
Cheney writes that one Republican was scared of voting for Trump’s second impeachment and added, “I absolutely understood his fear.” The daughter of a former Vice President who served as the Vice Chair of the Select Committee investigating the January 6 insurrection details her interactions with other prominent politicians, including McConnell and Jordan. Most already denied the allegations Cheney presented with Trump’s spokesperson saying that Cheney’s book belonged “in the fiction section of the bookstore.”
