GOP is divided
It is no secret that the Republican party is heavily divided into those who support the former president and those who do not see him as part of it. Despite personal preferences, some chose to stay with the party, not because of, but despite the MAGA Republicans. Trump and his supporters call them RINO, Republicans in the name only.
The rest are ready for someone new, but who?
Despite wanting a fresh face, so far, no one has been able to shake up Trump’s position in the party. Many saw Ron DeSantis as a savior, but that has many problems.
DeSantis is seen as Trump minus the drama
DeSantis, the governor of Florida, allegedly told his backers he was “Trump without the drama.” He also signed numerous highly controversial laws that could backfire nationally.
Facing Trump could be a significant problem
If DeSantis or someone else got head-to-head with Trump, there is no doubt they would face MAGA fury. Being on the receiving end of Trump’s wrath is not a fun place, and even the most experienced politicians have difficulty dealing with the former president and his followers.
Trump’s fame is still going strong
After the Manhattan, Miami, Georgia, and DC indictments, Trump did not fully embrace the upcoming elections. Trump is still leading the Republican primaries, and rumor has it that DeSantis, who is still far behind Trump, is working on a new approach.
A hypothetical scenario suitable for everyone but Trump supporters
Matt Lewis, DailyBeast columnist and media personality, shared his views. As a non-MAGA conservative, he suggested that Trump might run and lose the elections. That will mark the end of MAGA and a new beginning for the party.
But how would non-Republicans feel about someone like DeSantis?
DeSantis, for many, is a worse option than seeing Trump back in the White House. The governor of Florida is not afraid of signing undesirable and often harmful bills, among which are banning books, deleting a good portion of American history, the “Don’t say gay” bill, the “Don’t say period” bill, the 6-week abortion ban, and more.
You can’t always get what you want
Though Lewis prefers the GOP to fall in line behind a mainstream Republican nominee, you can’t always get what you want. As Lewis writes, accelerating Trumpism might “be the only way to finally purge Trumpism from the GOP.”
Is that even possible?
Even if GOP merely let Trump run and lose, would that end the MAGA movement? In the past months, you’ve heard numerous times that Republicans are turning their backs on Trump. Reuters/Ipsos poll conducted in June says that around 43% of self-identified Republicans said Trump was their chosen candidate, compared to 22% who chose DeSantis.
The Democrats are watching
Unlike Republicans, the Democrats were never a united party with one leader. Despite recent controversies and talks about Biden’s age, Democratic lawmakers are campaigning behind the president. It might not be what many wanted, but Biden already beat Trump.
Again, this is all someone’s opinion
When it comes to ending the Trump era, watching him lose while being part of the Republican party might be wishful thinking. But now, he is bigger than the party, which is always the problem.
