Trump and DeSantis have been at each other’s throats for months, but when DeSantis officially entered the GOP’s race for the presidential candidate, things got out of control.
Desantis calls out Trump for adding $8 trillion to the debt
Two days after entering the race for the White House in 2024, DeSantis turned on Trump, saying: “He added almost $8 trillion to the debt in a four-year period.” The comments came at the peak of the debt ceiling crisis, so saying that debt rose from $19.9 trillion to about $27.7 trillion during Trump’s time in office was one of the biggest insults to Trump’s campaign.
Trump’s Truth Social post after DeSantis’ announcement
The former president had plenty to say after DeSantis’ Twitter launch of his campaign. On Truth Social, he wrote, “Wow. The DeSanctus TWITTER launch is a DISASTER!” Trump continued. “His whole campaign will be a disaster. WATCH!”
The level of loyalty
Trump previously shared, “Rob DeSanctimonious came to me asking for help. He was losing badly, by 31 points, to popular Agriculture Commissioner Adam Putnam. He was getting ready to drop out of the race – Ran a terrible campaign! Ron told me he had one last chance, my Support & Endorsement, which Putnam, and everyone else, wanted also. I gave it to Ron, and the race was over. In one day, he went from losing badly to winning by a lot. With 3 LARGE TRUMP RALLIES, he WON THE GENERAL ELECTION in an upset. DISLOYAL!!!”
Disney on Truth Social
The infamous war between DeSantis and Disney was subjected to Trump’s keen eye. On his social network, the former president wrote, “DeSanctus is being absolutely destroyed by Disney. His original P.R. plan fizzled, so now he’s going back with a new one in order to save face.” Trump added, “Disney’s next move will be the announcement that no more money will be invested in Florida because of the Governor.” So far, this part is truthful since Disney canceled a new project worth a billion and 2000 new jobs.
DeSantis on Stormy Daniels’ alleged hush money probe
DeSantis poked fun at Trump in March before the charges by the Manhattan DA were made official. He said to the crowd, “Look, I don’t know what goes into paying hush money to a porn star to secure silence over some type of alleged affair.” While DeSantis criticized the Manhattan district attorney, this comment spoke volumes, and no one paid attention to what else DeSantis had to say.
DeSantis answers questions about Trump’s attacks
In February, DeSantis fired back at Trump during a press conference. He was asked about Trump’s attacks on him, and DeSantis tried to play it off cool, “I spend my time delivering results for the people of Florida and fighting against Joe Biden. That’s how I spend my time.” He just had to add, “I don’t spend my time trying to smear other Republicans.”
Personality transplant
First, Trump stated, “He’s got no personality. And I don’t think he’s got a lot of political skills.” But, what made people go hysterical was saying, “The problem with Rondesanctimonious is that he needs a personality transplant, and those are not yet available. Almost all congressmen and women that served with him and knew him well supported me, some of them surprisingly so because of their relationship with Ron.”

The Florida governor recently said that Trump’s first three years were great, but “when he turned the country over to Fauci in March of 2020, that destroyed millions of people’s lives.” Of course, he then continued praising his work without mentioning how many people died of Covid, “Florida, since Covid, has outperformed virtually any state in the country, when you look at all these significant metrics, I mean, we’re booming,”
But Trump said his peace months ago
In February, months before DeSantis’ Covid talk, Trump stated, “Florida was actually closed for a great, long period of time,” He added, “Remember, he closed the beaches and everything else? They’re trying to rewrite history.”

Talking to Fox, Trump said, “I thought it was very disloyal when he said ‘Yes, I’d run.’ I got him past two races.” He continued, “I got the guy elected. He came to see me, let’s say, weeping because he was dead. He was getting out of the race. He was looking for jobs already. Probably at law firms or wherever he is going to look. He was totally dead. He ran a horrible campaign…it was like a wipeout. The election was going to be very soon. I said you are dead. If George Washington endorsed you are not going to win.”
DeSantis’ response over “juvenile” behavior
DeSantis said about Trump’s name-calling, “I think it’s so petty. I think it’s so juvenile. I don’t think that’s what voters want.” In a speech, DeSantis responded to Trump with a jab, “Hell, his whole family moved to Florida under my governorship.”
Still, DeSantis would likely “pardon” Trump if necessary
DeSantis already has plans for his first day in the White House: “What I’m going to do is … on day one, I will have folks that will get together and look at all these cases (of) people who are victims of weaponization or political targeting, and we will be aggressive at issuing pardons.” That includes January 6 rioters and former president Trump if he ends up convicted. But DeSantis also said he would initiate a major shake-up of the FBI and DOJ, again, on the first day.
What’s to come
This is just the beginning, so expect plenty of dirty laundry and allegations in the upcoming months. Considering the two worked closely once upon a time, the primaries could be just as messy as presidential election campaigns next year.
