The president’s executive orders aim to reduce gun violence and the proliferation of guns sold to prohibited people, but not everyone is thrilled.
Biden wants to tackle the gun problem
The White House reported in July that “Biden Administration has taken more executive action to reduce gun violence than any other president’s at this point in their Administration.” The same statement celebrated one year since “Bipartisan Safer Communities Act.”
Inside this act
The historic act, also known as the “Act to make our communities safer,” included supplemental funding for the Community Mental Health Services Block Grant, funding to support new children and families serving mental health grantees, additional funding for states and territories to expand and enhance the 988 Suicide & Crisis Lifeline services, and funding to expand the Certified Community Behavioral Health Clinics (CCBHC) program.
More moves by the Biden administration
The new rule would revisit the definition of a gun dealer. 25 House Democrats proposed a 1000% excise tax on assault weapons and large capacity magazines, Fox News reported.
Complaining to McCarthy
The bill was presented after over 100 Democrats from the Gun Violence Prevention Task Force wrote to House Speaker Kevin McCarthy they were offended that not one gun control bill had been voted upon during the season.
The new rule’s meaning
The Times explained that the new requirement “could set a threshold number of transactions that would define a dealer; gun-control groups hope to see it at five sales a year or lower. The rules will be backed up by a renewed push to prosecute businesses that refuse to register by accessing bank records, storage unit leases, and other expenses associated with running an off-the-books gun business.”
Gun control group Giffords celebrated
The group, set by former Democratic Representative Gabby Giffords of Arizona and Democratic Senator Richard Blumenthal of Connecticut, shared on X, “Every gun sale should require a background check. Thanks to POTUS, we’re almost there.”
Giffords is waiting for the new act
The group further shared, “For years, we’ve pushed for the government to require more gun sellers to become licensed dealers and conduct background checks. ATF is expected to act any day now.”
Senator congratulated Biden
Richard Blumenthal from Connecticut, wrote on X, “I’m hoping all new regulations will be issued & made effective soon by the Biden Administration under the Bipartisan Safer Communities Act.”
Gun Owners of America fired back
The group issued a statement, “While Gun Owners of America fights for the Second Amendment in the courts, Congress must repeal the Bipartisan Safer Communities Act—which was a compromise with the Biden Administration that Republicans NEVER should have struck.”
GOA had more to say
The statement continued, “It has been completely weaponized, gun owners have gained nothing, and America is no safer. Cornyn-Murphy has got to go, and Republicans must expiate for this sin.” It added, “Congress must also participate in the rulemaking process and voice its opposition to backdoor universal background registration checks during the public notice and comment period alongside GOA members.”
Pro-gun group concluded
GOA concluded, “Congress must also take up a joint resolution of disapproval pursuant to the Congressional Review Act and strike down this unconstitutional infringement.”
NRA reacted
NRA (National Rifle Association) wrote, “Biden’s latest executive order is not so much a roadmap as a declaration: gun ownership and firearm-related businesses are bad and a “whole of government approach” must be used to suppress them.”
Americans are for sticker gun laws
64% of Americans favor stricter gun control laws, with 36% opposing, CNN polling suggested in their May survey. After a Monterey Park, California, shooting, the president said, “Survivors will always carry the physical and emotional scars.”
