North Carolina governor Roy Cooper said the education system is in a “state of emergency” and “under assault” by the GOP lawmakers.

Cooper shared, “Public education powers our workforce, builds our businesses, and boosts our communities. Unfortunately, our public schools are under assault.” He added, “The current General Assembly is considering extreme legislation that would cripple our public education system.”

The governor pointed out, “It’s clear that the Republican legislature is aiming to choke the life out of public education. I’m declaring this a state of emergency because you need to know what’s happening.”

“If you care about public schools in North Carolina, it’s time to take immediate action and tell them to stop the damage that will set back our schools for a generation,” concluded the governor.

Beyond banning books

The whole country is passing various dubious bills, from banning books to deleting gender and race from history. The governor’s statement comes as a response to “extreme” bills GOP lawmakers are not only signing but promoting.

Florida is one example

In Florida, the so-called “Don’t say gay” bill forbids teaching about the existence of the LGBTQ community. But it also made adjustments that could rewrite history. Another example is erasing portions of history, including DEI teachings. DeSantis had a simple message for college students who want to know more about diversity, “Go to Berkeley.”

Dangerous concepts

During a press conference, Cooper said parents should contact their state legislator to complain about the recently introduced bills.

One of the most extreme bills would create a “standard course advisory commission” to recommend curriculum standards for the state’s schools and a second bill prohibiting schools from “promoting certain concepts.”

Culture wars in classrooms

One concept is that “one race or sex is inherently superior to another race or sex.” And another one is that “an individual, solely by virtue of his or her race or sex, bears responsibility for actions committed in the past by other members of the same race or sex.”

Erasing science

Apart from rewriting history to fit a specific agenda, the state is worried about constantly eliminating core science classes.

Cooper also issued a news release

In a new release, the governor said these laws would face the State Board of Education into partisan elections and take its power away. He added, “Let education experts make curriculum decisions on what students learn.”

Teacher shortage

The governor explained that there is a shortage of teachers due to mainly low incomes. Governor Cooper’s budget proposed an 18% pay raise over two years.

The governor also said creating a voucher system to send kids to private schools without family income limits would allow the ultra-rich to educate their children in private schools for free.

Cooper declared, “Stop private school vouchers with no income limits. The governor continued by adding, “It will rob public schools of needed funding and sanctions discrimination. Instead, use public money for public schools.”

Governor Cooper’s mission in the upcoming days and weeks is to meet with business leaders, educators, and parents to raise awareness about the dangers of the bills and to ask for support to protect public schools across North Carolina.
