South Dakota’s governor Kristi Noem signed a pledge by a conservative group Moms4Liberty to “advance policies that strengthen parental decision-making.”
Noem shared the controversial move on social media
The governor was in the headlines recently for stating that her 2-year-old granddaughter owns two guns. She shared on Twitter that she signed Moms4Liberty’s pledge.
South Dakota governor’s tweet
“In South Dakota, we’re building stronger families by protecting parents’ rights,” the governor started. She then shared that she was “proud” to sign the “pledge to advance policies that strengthen parental decision-making.”
Parents should parent
In conclusion, Noem wrote, “Parents should parent their kids. Not the government.” This is a common phrase used in far-right groups to justify banning books and legalizing laws such as the “Don’t Say Gay” bill from Florida.
Moms4Liberty
The group was started in 2021 by three moms from Florida. The former school board members wanted to further the conservative values under the disguise of “parental rights.”
Empowering organization
On the official website, Moms4Liberty is “dedicated to fighting for the survival of America by unifying, educating and empowering parents to defend their parental rights at all levels of government.”
Expectations vs. reality
Apart from banning school books that mention the diversity of any kind and standing up against the LGBTQ+ community, not much is known about the infamous organization.
Noem attacked the president recently
Noem vowed to fight President Biden’s plan to forbid schools from altogether banning trans athletes. In March, she signed a bill prohibiting gender-affirming care for trans kids and teens in South Dakota. Doctors who are administrating gender-affirming care must stop by December 31.
Tweeting to Biden
Noem tweeted, “South Dakota will not allow this to stand. We will lead. We will defend our laws. Only girls will play girls’ sports.” She concluded, “President Biden, we’ll see you in court.”
The LGBTQ+ people in South Dakota
South Dakota has the highest number of people suffering from depression in the LGBTQ+ community. It is estimated that around 90% of people have the condition.
Noem brushed off questions about it
A journalist asked her, “Why do you think that is?” Noem answered, “I don’t know. That makes me sad, and we should figure it out,” and continued with other questions.
On the list for Trump’s VP
Noem is highly ranked on the list of potential VPs for Donald Trump.
Twitter users had to remind Noem who were Moms4Liberty
One person reminded Noem that “Moms4Liberty is a hate group.” Another added, “Moms4Liberty are anything but…”
Some want her to stay out of their business
A Twitter poster shared, “I think what you mean to say is that parents should parent their OWN kids, not everybody else’s. STAY OUT OF MY HOUSE!”

Another wrote, “Then why don’t you let us parents be the parents instead of signing bills into law that take that away?” They continued, “And you know that Moms for Liberty is a misnomer, and they are a Christofascist organization? I’ll wait while you ask Ian what the big words mean.”
