Chris Christie, a former New Jersey governor, asked Democratic strategist Donna Brazile to “calm down” while discussing a proposed ban on the abortion pill.
Abortion discussion
Christie, a Republican, talked about the importance of each state deciding their abortion rules. The former governor spoke about DeSantis and his abortion ban after six weeks.
Opinion on Trump
The Republican former governor shared that “This is not going to be a 2016 field,” adding there will “be six to eight candidates that are going to be running.”
The argument on ABC
Chris Christie and Donna Brazile were on the ABC panel when Christie claimed that Republicans could oppose abortion rights and get elected.
The former governor’s stance
He said, “Look, I was pro-life governor in New Jersey, which is one of the most pro-choice states in America.” Jonathan Karl, who was also in the studio with Brazile and Christie, replied, “But you weren’t attempting to ban abortion in New Jersey.”
His personal views did not interfere with his politics
Christie argued, “I wasn’t, but John – your personal views were, I mean, I was very clear about my personal views, though.” He continued, “If people believe it comes from your heart and that you have a legitimate, not a political explanation for what you’re doing, lots of people, not all voters, but lots of voters will say to you, all right, we can disagree on that one.”
Brazile expressed her anger
Brazile was upset about a federal judge who issued an order partially banning the abortion drug mifepristone. The Supreme Court blocked the decision.
Brazile said politicians should not play doctors
She shared, “I think at the heart of this conversation with the abortion pill is whether or not we’re going to allow politicians to pretend to be doctors.” Brazile added that “A judge who’s not a doctor to say that this medication is somehow or another unsafe and should be restricted or not available.”
The argument escalated
While Brazile was visibly angry and shared that with the viewers, Christie told her, “Calm down.” But that did nothing to stop Brazile from making a valid point.
Brazile put him in his place
Brazile shared, “I’m so angry about what’s happening,” when Chritties interrupted. But she continued, “I’m angry because of what it’s doing to women in this country,” Brazile continued, ignoring Christie.
Making a point
The former acting Chair of the Democratic National Committee and the author continued, “I’m angry because it’s setting us back. I’m also angry because, once again, men are telling us what to do with our bodies.”
