Daily Salinas, a mom from Florida who banned Amanda Gorman’s Inauguration poem “The Hill We Climb” and a number of books, admitted she only reads parts of the material.
Alleged ties to the Proud Boys and Moms For Liberty
The advocacy group, Miami Against Fascism, posted photos of Salinas attending the same rallies as far-right group members Pride Boys and Moms For Liberty. She, however, claims she only attended rallies but is not part of any group.
Salinas reported the books for things like “CRT and gender ideology”
Salinas spoke about “The Hill We Climb” and described it as something Oprah wrote. She said it was “not educational and had indirect hate messages.” Bob Graham Educational Center, a public school in Miami-Dade County, restricted access to the poem Amanda Gorman wrote and recited at President Joe Biden’s inauguration.
The Florida mom explained her complaints
Speaking to the Jewish Telegraphic Agency, Salinas said Gorman’s poem and five other books did not support the curriculum. She defended herself by saying, “I’m not an expert. I’m not a reader. I’m not a book person. I’m a mom involved in my children’s education.”
Miami-Dade school administrators defended their actions
The officials from the Miami-Dade school said, “No literature (books or poems) has been banned or removed. It was determined at the school that ‘The Hill We Climb’ is better suited for middle school students, and it was shelved in the middle school section of the media center. The book remains available in the media center.”
Gorman reacted
The awarded poet wrote on Twitter, “For those claiming my book wasn’t banned, just ‘aged-up,’ ‘The Hill We Climb’ is an inaugural poem for the world,” She added, “Relocating it to older age group library shelves by its nature bars younger and equally deserving generations from accessing said moment in history.”
Things soon unraveled
Miami-Dade County’s mayor invited Gorman to read her work in the Miami area after a local K-8 public school. The mayor tweeted, “Your poem inspired our youth to become active participants in their government. And to help shape the future. We want you to come to Miami-Dade to do a reading of your poem. If you’re in, we will coordinate.”
Salinas is a massive DeSantis supporter
The Daily Beast reported that Salinas volunteered on DeSantis’ “Education Agenda Tour” in August 2022. Allegedly, she traveled to boost conservative candidates across the State to stand up to “indoctrinating” children.
The Florida mom’s dubious post
In March, Salinas shared a Facebook post, “The Protocols of the Learned Elders of Zion,” which included a series of anti-Semitic tropes about an alleged Jewish conspiracy to control the world. She claims she saw the word “communism” and did not read the rest before she shared the post.
The apology
Salinas deleted the post and told JTA, “I want to apologize to the Jewish community.” She added, “I’m not what the post says. I love the Jewish community.”
Salinas is against oppression
The Daily Beast reported that the Florida mom came from Cuba and told PBS, “The reason why we came here, I remember, I was little, and I say I need to live. It’s too much oppression and the dictator.” She became politically active during Covid-19 and attended numerous protests.
