A boss announced that there would be no days off, and if employees did not like it, they were free to leave. This ended up on Reddit, and to say that people were angered would be an understatement.
The boss wrote the message five hours before the workday started
The poster shared the message that said, “No one can request days off anymore. I will do the schedule, and if you don’t show up, you are automatically fired. If you don’t like it, go find a job somewhere else.”
If your days off were preapproved, they are not now
Apart from the message, the Reddit poster added, “Employees were approved their time off over a month ago, but it’s a problem now because management forgot.”
The boss scheduled a meeting for 9:30 p.m.
In his final line, the boss wrote, “mandatory meeting “at 9:30 p.m..” As one Reddit poster shared, “Wednesday, 9:30 p.m.? That’s a no from me, dog.” Another replied, “I hope nobody goes to a meeting.”
This message represents an ongoing trend
Though disturbing, this message is a way for employees to make others quit. But, it can backfire, as Christopher Kayes, a professor of management at the George Washington University School of Business, shared that this behavior can lead to workers leaving despite not being targeted by the quiet-firing, adding, “It doesn’t create an inclusive or high-performance workplace culture.”
Impossible scheduling
The original poster added this was their first job where the “scheduling seems impossible to manage.” He explained, “The only reason it’s so tough is [that] they make it hours before the start day and scramble around to figure it out.” One Reddit user replied, “If only there were some sort of spreadsheet that would keep track of that sort of thing.”
The employer is always right
The original poster added, “They’d rather blame it on the employees that did their part exactly right over a month ago.”
Directing new employees
The original poster shared that he has been directing new workers and telling them that “he isn’t a good boss and [that] they could go anywhere and start at a higher pay and better leadership.”
Many had questions
One person wanted to know, “How are people supposed to plan doctors’ appointments or things with family or vacations? If only they could figure out how to do their own job.”
Like a fictional world
This person wondered, “I am reading this and wondering the same thing. This whole thread seems to describe some dystopian fictional world…. but it is actually real?!”
Some posted their solutions
One shared, “I would forward that to HR. I mean, you aren’t staying there anyway. So might as well try to take him down with you.”
Time to strike?
Another Reddit poster replied, “This is a perfect time for all employees to strike. Go to the building and refuse to go in until this manager is fired, and they get a raise and added PTO days. Anyone shows up to interview, show them the messages.”
Others were solely focused on the boss
Someone wrote, “Great way to run a company……into the ground.” Another thought, “This dude is having a serious mental breakdown and doesn’t care if everyone quits. He’s snapped. It happens all the time.”
Do you believe quitting would be the only option?
Many Reddit users shared they would quit as soon as possible. Do you agree with them?
