Trump Tells to Supporters they “Don’t Have to Vote” and Compares Himself to Mandela — “This is the type of talk that loses elections”

In a rather unconventional campaign speech in New Hampshire, former President Donald Trump told his supporters that they “don’t have to vote” on election day next year, suggesting they use their time for something else.

On Monday, at an event in Derry, New Hampshire, Trump delivered an unexpected statement by referring to the 2020 presidential election and suggesting to the crowd that they should watch other voters instead of supporting his candidacy.

“So we have to be careful, you gotta get out there, and you got to watch those voters,” Trump stated. “You don’t have to vote, don’t worry about voting. The voting, we got plenty of votes, you gotta watch.”

Trump’s remarks didn’t sit right with a member of the Ron DeSantis campaign, who expressed criticism on X. “This is the type of talk that loses elections,” Press Secretary Bryan Griffin wrote. “Meanwhile, @RonDeSantis has vowed to cede NO GROUND and organize in every state to maximize turnout for R voters AND compete head to head with the Dems to beat them at their own tactics (if they harvest, we will legally harvest.)”

While DeSantis is in the running for the GOP’s 2024 presidential nomination and is often considered a strong potential rival to Trump, the latter still maintains his lead in recent polls. Meanwhile, the Florida governor’s campaign hasn’t enjoyed the same level of success.

Every Vote Counts

Every vote will matter for Trump, as he currently leads the pack in the race for the 2024 Republican presidential nomination. The upcoming presidential election could potentially bring about a repetition of the tight margins experienced in pivotal swing states during the 2016 and 2020 elections.

Spokesperson Offers Clarification

In response to the controversial comment, a spokesperson for Trump provided clarification to Insider, stating what the former president intended with his words: “He was clearly talking about election integrity and making sure only legal votes are counted, and not letting what happened in 2020 happen again.”

Trump’s comments in New Hampshire, where he officially submitted his paperwork to enter the state’s upcoming 2024 presidential primary, were just one of the unusual things to take notice of.

The New Nelson Mandela

Trump drew a comparison between strongly criticized efforts during the 2020 election and the efforts of South African anti-apartheid leader Nelson Mandela. “If you want to challenge the result of an election, they hound you,” Trump said. “But we don’t get scared — we don’t get scared. I’ll tell you what, I don’t mind being Nelson Mandela because I’m doing it for a reason.”

Blaming Biden

Before his speech, Trump, known for his extensive legal battles even before his national office tenure, claimed that the word “indictment” was never heard until the Biden administration. “We did nothing wrong,” he asserted. “This is all Biden. Indictments, impeachments. This is all about Biden. You can’t do anything right. The only thing they know how to do is cheat on elections, election fraud. This is all Biden stuff, all of these indictments in DC. I was never indicted. You practically never heard the word, it wasn’t a word that registered.”

Close Victories

President Joe Biden narrowly defeated Trump in several key states in the 2020 election, while Trump’s journey to his 2016 win was marked by exceedingly close victories in Pennsylvania, Wisconsin, and Michigan.

 Conspiracy Theories and GOP Defeats

Throughout Trump’s 2020 presidential campaign and a tightly fought US Senate race in Georgia, some attributed GOP losses to Mr. Trump’s persistent election conspiracy theories. Erick Erickson, a conservative political commentator in Georgia, reflected on the situation by saying: “Telling everyone that the race was stolen when it didn’t cost the Republicans two Senate seats. Going all-in on the cult of personality around President Trump hurt them as a result. They had to play up this, ‘There’s no way Donald Trump could have lost. It had to be stolen from him.’”
