Ben Raanan shared advice for bad tippers and divided the internet. The tipping culture in the US is not easy to understand, though most people have learned that 15% is acceptable. Now, the server says that 20% should be the norm.
Restaurant workers earn $2.13 per hour, so they live off their tips. However, this is an issue the workers should resolve with their employers. Or is it?
Raanan’s rant
The video starts with Ben saying, “This is for all you bad tippers out there.” He adds, “If you don’t know how to tip, I get that.”
Raanan continued by saying that “10 dollars is not like cute like it used to be.” He adds, “It’s not the 1950s. It’s not the 2000s anymore.”
The server on inflation
Ben continued, “Inflation means that 10 dollars is not worth that much anymore.” He then points out, “You can’t just leave a little five, a little ten for your server, and think that’s like funny-cute.”
A tipping example
He gives an example, “If your bill was like 50 dollars, you could leave 10, that’s 20%.” However, “If your bill was 200 dollars, and you leave me 10, that’s fu..ed up, that’s an insult.”
The waiter was triggered
He shared that if someone leaves him a tip of 5% and comes back to the restaurant or even 10%, “I’m gonna say something.”
Ben said he would ask customers who are bad tippers if there were any problems last time and remind them how much they tipped.
How to calculate a tip
Raanan said, “Take the bill, move it one decimal point, that’s 10%, double it, that’s 20%.” He adds, “That’s what you should tip.”
The server had no bad intentions
Ben told BoredPanda, “Tips are our pay for our service. The bill is what you pay for the food, and the tip is what you pay for the service.”
He added that most people do not understand inflation, but there is more, as he said, “The capitalist institution/the restaurant industry has convinced people that tips are optional for some reason.”
The comments were divided
One shared, “If you can’t afford to tip 18 to 20%, you can’t afford to eat out.”
Another wrote, “Everyone should work in the service industry once.”
Ben shared his thoughts on better wages
As Ben explained, this is not always the solution: “People don’t wanna hear that that would still make you have to pay more. Which you should, because again you’re getting a service, you have to pay for that. But I think people take for granted that the service they get in restaurants is worth money, which is sad that the system has made it seem like it has optional worth.”
The server believes 20% is fair
He concluded, “I think there should be an automatic 20% gratuity, and if there was really a problem with your service, you should have to ask for the manager to take it off and explain why.”
Many disagreed with the viral video’s poster
One wrote, “I am so tired of serves being so entitled.”
Another shared, “The audacity.”
Some advised Ben to save that energy for his employer.
Those not from the States do not get the issue
People from all over the world claimed they were thankful they did not face this type of judgment.
Tipping in Europe is optional, while in some Asian countries, it is a sign of bad taste.
Others were just nasty
Some TikTok users even said they would never tip Ben after this video. Others told him to find a new career, and some even called to “cancel tipping.”
