Ron DeSantis losing votes due to “high profile issues” with women

The Florida governor in the race for GOP’s presidential candidate, Ron DeSantis, has one major problem – female voters. Unlike DeSantis, his most significant potential Republican opponent, Donald Trump, had more women supporters during the 2020 elections than in 2016.

While DeSantis did not say much, Trump continually attacked the Florida governor, including claims that DeSantis was “dropping like a rock in the polls.” For example, DeSantis did not answer if he would, if elected, offer pardon if he got convicted Trump, but strongly hinted at it.

Trump did better among female voters in 2020 than in 2016 by a five-point margin. He did better in 2020 because more voters for both parties were willing to get out and cast their votes.

Women prefer Democrats

Trump still lost the elections, as overall, women tend to give their votes to the Democratic leaders, Rutgers University’s Center for American Women and Politics concluded.

The abortion ban

The Data for Progress poll shared that a six weeks ban was opposed by 54 percent of women and supported by 35 percent.

Banning books and CRT

Another major issue for women is education, or to be precise, removing and reviewing books and flagging them as inappropriate, which was opposed by 57 percent and supported by 32 percent. Banning college majors and minors in Critical Race Theory was opposed by 53 percent and supported by 30 percent of women voters.

Eliminating the DEI program was opposed by 53 percent and supported by 29 percent. It is understandable why gender studies were critical for many women. Banning gender studies and limiting AP psychology turned out to be quite unpopular, with 58 percent opposing this stance and 27 percent supporting it.

The question of allowing people to carry guns without permits or training raised concerns among 75 percent of female voters. Only 19 percent saw it as a good move.

DeSantis’ war on “woke”

For DeSantis, everything bad is woke. He called out CRT, DEI, and gender studies as “woke indoctrination.” And this did not sit well with women or some of his donors.

Some still argue he would make a great president

Billionaire Peter Thiel, a Paypal co-founder, stated DeSantis would “make a terrific president” despite his obsession with the “woke” issue.

Many forgot that Trump was behind Roe’s overturn

Adam Cayton, a University of West Florida government professor, told Newsweek that Trump appointed three judges to the Supreme Court. In turn, they helped him reverse the 50-year precedent. Cayton explained, “The Supreme Court opens the door to states restricting abortion access, and [DeSantis is] the one who has to sign the bills and enforce the law that the state legislature puts in place.” He added, “he can only do that because of President Trump.”

Interesting conclusion

Cayton concluded, “I think it would be really interesting to see if governors and other state-level officials get more backlash than a national-level official who’s equally but indirectly responsible for it.”

On a national level, this issue might be a problem

The professor shared, “It’s certainly possible that in a general election, these very high-profile issues will harm DeSantis because he’s directly had his hands on carrying them out.”
