A young server from California complained that she earned 40$ in tips but had to give away 25 to the cook because of her boss’ new policies.
The comment section in the viral video asked many important questions, and with lower tips, things are getting out of hand.
The waitress was almost in tears
In her TikTok video, the young woman appeared almost in tears while explaining her situation. She explained, “When I started there, we tipped out for cooks 10 percent of whatever we made.” But things swiftly changed.
The cooks were not happy, so the boss set new rules
The server continued her story: “They (the cooks) haven’t been really happy with the amount that I’ve been tipping out cos it’s been a small amount.” The woman only works 2 to 3 hours, so she makes less than other servers.
She described how other waitresses work
In the caption of her TikTok video, the server shared how others work “8-hour days from open – close and make way more money.” That’s why the new rule is easier for them. However, the poster works shorter and “in the section that doesn’t get a lot of business because it’s for overflow.”
New rules
The boss implemented a mandatory to tip the cooks 25$ on weekdays and 40$ on weekends. On one Saturday, the young woman only worked for two hours, and “it was slow, so they sent me home early.”
The woman only got 40$ in tips
She was still expected to pay the full sum of 40$ to the cook. That was all she earned that day, and so, “I told her about it, and she made me tip 25, and I only went home with 15.”
The server asked if that was fair
The woman ended the video by asking, “Do you guys think that’s fair?” She received over 14k responses, and many people gave some valuable advice.
People believe she would quit
Among the most popular comments, one read: “Old management trick, they want you to leave.” Another shared, “Girl, look for new employment.”
Some claimed it was illegal
One TikTok user wrote, “This seems illegal. I’m a server and have never been made to tip out the cooks. Once in a while, a guest will give extra for them but not mandatory.”
Sue the boss?
Another advised, “That’s unfair and, honestly, could be illegal. If you do not make a minimum wage for the hours you work in a week, you can sue your boss.”
Many encouraged a woman to seek help
A server of 30 years wrote, “Contact labor & industries! Write down how much you make & tip daily!” Another stated, “Call your labor board. Make sure you have recording or writing.”
Tipping culture is crazy
One TikTok user pointed out that tipping culture has gone mad, adding, “Cooking is their job, they shouldn’t rely on tips from others.” This person concluded, “The whole American tipping thing is such a scam, so employers don’t have to pay their staff a decent wage.”
