“How Do People Afford Anything?” – Public Interest Attorney Wonders How To Survive in This Economy

A TikTok user, @loloverruled, addressed his nearly 800k followers, pleading with them: “I’m gonna lie to you. I don’t know how people afford anything anymore.”

The lawyer from NYC then explained that a cup of morning coffee and a breakfast sandwich cost double, and that’s not even compared to several years ago.

The post gathered a significant number of likes and thousands of comments.

The lawyer repeated, “I don’t know how people afford anything.” He added he owns “7 thousand dollars in credit card debt. Not kidding.”

He continued, “I’m an attorney. Im a public interest attorney, so I make like a lot less money. But I don’t make a bad living.”

With a confused look, the man said he did not know “how anybody is surviving at this point.”

He ended his video with a grim statement, “I don’t know how much longer we’ve got before this whole house of cards collapses.”

Most of the TikTok comments felt the original poster’s struggles. One of the best-rated remarks said, “It’s not even cheaper to eat at home anymore.”

Another person wrote, “100k salary is like the new 50k.”

This person shared, “Right?! Like why does buying coffee and a snack cost two hours of minimum wage?”

Another made an interesting observation: “I make more than my parents and grandparents did at my age, and I’m somehow worse off than them.”

One man’s words echoed what many thought, “I’m not surviving anymore. Just going through the motions to keep it together for my kids. I heard something on a podcast a long time ago: ‘we’re all one financial mistake away from being homeless.’ I felt that.”

Many are also maxing out their credit cards, as one person said, “I’m convinced everyone is also in crazy debt, floating things on credit constantly.”

People continued by sharing prices of groceries, or as one person simplified, “it costs 100 just to go outside.”

The New York-based lawyer’s viral video resonated with people from within the same niche. One woman wrote, “As a public defender, I feel this. I have never been more broke in my life… even during college.”
