Obama and Clinton were not wrong: The current GOP is “an authoritarian cult of personality,” the numbers say

Obama and Clinton had described modern GOP voters as “deplorable” and even asked, “What happened to the Republican party,” but to understand that, political scientist Brian Klass and commentator Joe Scarborough agreed that one must understand the meaning of “an authoritarian cult.”

A political scientist shared on X a graphic that supported his claim, “Trump voters believe Trump is more likely to tell them the truth than their friends and family.”

He added, “To understand the modern GOP, you need to understand what an authoritarian cult of personality is because that’s what it has become.”

Scarborough and Brezinski discussed the poll

Joe Scarborough and Mika Brezinski discussed a CBS/YouGov poll that claimed the same: Trump supporters believe him more than their loved ones. Brezinski commented, “They trust the former president more than they trust their own loved ones. 71% say they feel what Trump tells them is the truth. I had friends and family at 63%, conservative media figures at 56%, and a religious leader at 42%.”

“Cult leaders must be dynamic, charismatic, and convincing because their goal is to control their members to acquire money or power-related advantages. These characteristics are crucial because a cult leader needs his members to strictly adhere to his teachings and doctrines,” Scarborough explained.

“Politicians serve the US”

“How twisted it is just generally that in America, people follow a political leader like we always ask questions,” the Morning Joe host continued, “Why? Why do people have flags of a politician? Trump People might be proud of that. No, that’s nothing to be proud of. Politicians serve us.”

The former politician turned host added, “Nearly 30% more people blindly follow their cult leader, Donald Trump, than their own religious leaders that say, please don’t tell me about how this is a Jesus thing. It’s not a Jesus thing. It’s a cult thing.”

Obama warned people

In 2008, the 44th president was in a small town in Pennsylvania when he shared, “The jobs have been gone now for 25 years, and nothing’s replaced them. And they fell through the Clinton administration and the Bush administration, and each successive administration has said that somehow these communities are gonna regenerate, and they have not.”

Frustrations and bitterness

“It’s not surprising then they get bitter, they cling to guns or religion or antipathy toward people who aren’t like them or anti-immigrant sentiment or anti-trade sentiment as a way to explain their frustrations,” Obama concluded.

“Basket of deplorables”

“To just be grossly generalistic, you can put half of Trump supporters into what I call the basket of deplorables,” Hillary Clinton said.

She backtracked, “I was ‘grossly generalistic,’ and that’s never a good idea. I regret saying ‘half’ – that was wrong.” That phrase, per Clinton, was used to describe “Racist, sexist, homophobic, xenophobic, Islamaphobic, you name it.”

Trump, the martyr

Scarborough, Brezinski, and Klass first looked at the poll and then made conclusions. Political analyst and Dillard University professor Robert Collins told Newsweek that the “poll demonstrates the extent to which voters are locked in and their minds are already made up.”

Collins added, “In the eyes of the Republican base, the indictments are turning Trump into a martyr. He has managed to convince his base that the indictments against him are really attacks on them and their beliefs. As a result, they are going to trust him as their primary source of information above all others.”
