McDonald’s is closing its offices this week as the company prepares to reevaluate job positions and notify workers who were laid off.
McDonald’s internal email
Wall Street Journal broke the story, and it allegedly contains part of the email employees received. It read, “During the week of April 3, we will communicate key decisions related to roles and staffing levels across the organization.”
Meetings in person were canceled too
The fast food giant also canceled all in-person meetings with its employees. The Chicago-based corporation sent emails to all workers in the U.S. and some parts of the world to be ready to work from home this week.
Updating business strategy
Though shocking, it was already reported that McDonald’s is rethinking its business strategy. In January, one of the largest fast-food chains said there would be changes, and many read that it meant layoffs in some areas and expansion in others.
The CEO spoke about this decision
In January, McDonald’s CEO Chris Kempczinski warned workers about “difficult discussions and decisions.”
Other large companies already did the same thing
Amazon, Google, and Facebook are among the tech giants that laid off thousands this year. The decisions come as companies try to counter a global economic slowdown and soaring inflation.
McDonald’s restructuring
Those who lost their job at McDonald’s will likely be notified by Wednesday. However, there is still no word on how many workers will be left without a job.
Fewer costs, more efficiency
The company’s major makeover should reshuffle and remove positions to gain the most effective yet cheapest working model.
CEO spoke about job changes
Talking to WSJ, Kempczinski said in January that some existing jobs might disappear or change their shape. At the time, the CEO did not know how much money he wanted to save or how many workers will be laid off.
There are over 40k McDonald’s restaurants worldwide
More than 13k McDonald’s restaurants are in the U.S. Many on Reddit are sure that the decision to shut down restaurants is due to security, as a person explained, “No freak outs in office, no potential physical attacks. Security access changed.”
Some would prefer being fired over Zoom
Another Reddit user wrote, “I, for one, would appreciate being fired on zoom. No need to pack up my things, embarrassing goodbyes, nervously sitting at my desk.”
Others pointed out that some jobs will stop existing
One person chimed in, “We’re not taking into account that American corporations are in a sea change of digital transformation that is getting rid of lots of jobs that will simply cease to exist in the future.” They added, “A.I. and specifically automation has been trickling into these industries for years, and the global pandemic set a number of them on turbo,”
Many noticed that the prices were too high
Someone shared, “It’s too expensive for poor-quality fast food.” Another replied, “I don’t understand how it’s more expensive to eat at McDonald’s than to get a burger at a restaurant in Hilton’s head.”
