Jenny said, “The epidural was about $17,253.” The husband, calmly rocking the baby, froze and asked the wife to repeat the number. But, little did he know that was just the beginning.
Welcoming Kimmery came with a price
The dad was still holding the baby, as the new mom continued listing that 24 hours at the hospital cost $3,675.60, while the food provided amounted to $176.70. Further, skin-to-skin contact was also included in the final bill, which surprised the new dad.
Josh started questioning the bill
Jenny told her husband, “The skin-to-skin contact you had with Kimmery was $4,000.” She added that it was free for her. Josh, completely in shock, wondered how it was possible for pizza to cost $200. He was also puzzled by the bill provided for holding his own child.
The total was close to $30k
With the discount provided by their insurance, the total was $28,219. Jenny told her husband they had 30 days to develop a payment plan.

Forbes wrote that childbirth with health insurance in the US is $2,854. But, the prices go up for cesarean deliveries. Without any insurance, birth will set you back over $18k.

Under the new laws, all hospital costs should be transparent. Misty McCrackin, a medical billing specialist with Hudson Valley Medical Bill Advocates, talked to HuffPost, urging people to contact a hospital billing department representative to review any concerns about the overall bill received.
The errors are more than marginal
JAMA Health Forum published a study claiming that nearly one in five new parents got an unexpected expense averaging $744 on their hospital bill after delivery. This number can go as high as over $2k. Billing errors are standard, as NBC reported that 7% to 49% of claims had some mishap.
