“We ain’t even safe at Target”: Mother with a baby gets accused of stealing by target employees at the self-checkout, feels discriminated

A Target customer went viral after saying she was accused of cheating in the store at the self-checkout lane.

Alexis, whose TikTok handle is @blexxican_, captured the video, “Target in Delray Beach, Florida. Claims their machine has not been scanning all items, and they need to count my items to make sure they all scanned.”

The video starts with Alexis asking the store employee to get a manager. The employee says they are the manager, as the video shows a brief shot of Alexis’ baby with them.

The store manager then took the items from Alexis’ card to check if she had scanned everything properly.

While the Target employee is rescanning the items, Alexis says, “Ma’am, I come here every week.” She then adds, “It feels like you’re accusing me of stealing.”

As another employee took over, Alexis said, “I come here every week, and you’re going to have the audacity to tell me you feel like I didn’t scan my items.”

The second employee suggested that the hand scanner was the issue, and they got the same amount as Alexis.

Alexis confirmed in a separate video how “the total was the same, they didn’t apologize or anything.”

In a follow-up video, Alexis said one of the employees was acting “dismissive.” Alexis said she felt discriminated against while adding, “Who’s going to steal from the Target they go to every week, let alone with their child?”

The original video surpassed 5.4 million views and received almost half a million likes.

Many commentators were upset with how Alexis was treated, as one TikTok user wrote, “Dang, I thought Walmart was bad, now we ain’t even safe at Target guys!!!”

Another said, “Once I ask if it was the same amount & they confirm it is, I would have said now return everything and give me my money back.”

One of the best-rated comments said, “I hope she was fired for that,” referring to the first employee’s treatment of Alexis and her baby boy.

Others were furious, “If they think people are stealing, then why do they have self-checkout, they should do their jobs and scan then!”

Some asked a legit question, “So why are they letting people use it if it’s not working properly ?”

This TikTok user echoed the statement, “if they think it’s messing up, then they should put an “OUT OF ORDER” sign up and not use it.”

The Gallup poll from 2021 suggested that 35 percent of Black Americans were treated poorly at store chains. Many people have called out retail chains and coined the term “Shopping While Black” to describe how these stores treat Black customers.
