Miss Italy Official Patron Patrizia Mirigliani told Radio Cusano, “Lately, beauty contests have been trying to make the news by also using strategies that I think are a bit absurd.” Il Primato Nazionale wrote about the interview, and Newsweek reported.

Mirigliani added, “Since it was born, my competition has foreseen in its regulation the clarification according to which one must be a woman from birth. Probably because, even then, it was foreseen that beauty could undergo modifications, or that women could undergo modifications, or that men could become women.”

Italy takes pageants and their rules seriously and regularly updates policies. The Sydney Morning Herald reported in 2012 that the competition banned competitors with plastic surgeries. Other prohibited things are “revealing swimwear,” body piercings, and tattoos since Miss Italy should reflect “classic beauties” from the ’50s.

Rikkie Valerie Kolle recently won the Miss Netherlands competition, and the backlash was massive. However, Kolle, the first transgender Miss Universe Netherlands, fired back. She told Newsweek, “The only thing I want to say to the haters is ‘thank you’ because you’re giving me a bigger platform than I can ever imagine.”

The new Miss Universe Netherlands wants to “speak up for the trans people” since she did not have proper support as a trans child. She added, “I didn’t have someone to look up to. I really want to be that role model and inspiration for others.” She aims to do something for the “trans health-care waiting list” because the lists are long, and she also wants people to get better help regarding their mental health.

Kolle received more than hateful comments

The new Miss Universe Netherlands told Reuters, “I thought we were really accepting . . . in the Netherlands, but the hate comments show the other side of our society. I hope that’s a wake-up call.” She also received death threats, as Kollé told Newsweek that her inbox is “full of people wishing me dead.”

Huffington Post Italy reported that Mirigliani said she was happy that the Miss Netherlands contest included transgender women. However, she pointed out that Italy is not changing the contest rules to allow transgender women to compete.

Among 21 Western countries, Spain is the most supportive when it comes to the rights of transgender people. Angela Ponce was the first transgender woman at Miss Universe, representing Spain in 2018. The company changed the rules in 2012, making it possible for transgender women to compete.
