Republicans were trying to nullify the election of a Democratic-backed Wisconsin Supreme Court justice, Democrats argued, following a hearing where the GOP relied on a false narrative regarding the 2020 elections.
Wisconsin Republicans pushing to fire the state’s nonpartisan elections director
Politico writes that GOP officials and sympathizers want to remove the state’s nonpartisan elections director before the elections. The Republicans scheduled a hearing on Meagan Wolfe, the administrator of the Wisconsin Elections Commission, and the Democrats see it as the first step into driving her out of the office.
Explanation for Donald Trump’s loss
“I think that it’s largely out of a desire to find an explanation for Donald Trump’s loss other than fewer people voted for him than Joe Biden,” said Ann S. Jacobs, a Democratic commissioner on the WEC. “She is the chief elections officer; she offers a face to the conspiracy theories.”
The sparring between Republicans and Wolfe
Since 2020, Wolfe and Republican lawmakers have mainly argued over conspiracy theories about the 2020 elections. Wolfe stated, “When your constituents challenge you about the integrity of Wisconsin elections, tell them the truth. Election officials cannot carry the burden of educating the public on elections alone.”
Republicans are holding hearings despite what the state AG says
State’s attorney general Josh Kaul said the law does not cover these hearings. State Senator Mark Spreitzer, a fellow Democrat, stated, “This committee cannot take up a nomination that has not been made,” adding, “This nomination is not properly before us.”
Biden’s narrow victory prompted actions by the Republicans
Former state Supreme Court Justice Michael Gableman was appointed as a “special counsel” whose role was to look into the elections in 2021.
Election fraud theories
Gableman, a Republican, continued spreading theories and even went after Wolfe’s looks. He mocked Wolfe on the radio, ” It wasn’t the pearls this time. It was the little locket on the — was it gold by any chance? It was, oh, Hillary Clinton.”
Wolfe fired back
Wolfe said, “I’m a professional who takes my job seriously. Comments directed at my appearance are a far cry from being serious and are beneath anybody who purports to be undertaking a review of subject matter as important as election integrity.”
Lawsuits got involved
The filing from Law Forward, a Madison-based liberal law firm, the Stafford Rosenbaum law firm, the Election Law Clinic at Harvard Law School, Campaign Legal Center, and the Arnold & Porter law firm, said, “Unhappy with this electoral result, which they could not prevent through gerrymandering, (Republicans) now seek to nullify the results and pick their Justices.”
Preserving power
Attorney Jeffrey Mandell, who is part of a coalition that filed one of the lawsuits, wrote, “Those who unconstitutionally locked themselves into control over the legislature are apoplectic that they cannot gerrymander the court.”
The will of voters
“They’re trying, again, to undo the will of Wisconsin voters and preserve their illegitimate power at all costs,” the attorney concluded.
State Senator Dan Knodl is the committee chairman
Knodl said, “I will not abdicate my authority, or the Senate’s authority, in this process.” He questioned Lisa Tollefson, the clerk for Rock County and Wolfe supporter.
A moment from the hearing
He asked, “In your testimony, you mentioned we’re going to be in a world of crazy,” Knodl said, “What are you predicting, or do you have information that something is on the horizon? Can we just follow the law, and the election should go okay? What’s that mean, the world of crazy?”
