“Meant to Be” takes on a whole new level in this story, as a man, 19 years older than his wife, discovered they first crossed paths when she was just a baby.
It was July 2018 when Rich Foetu Tomkinson, 48, met Evie Foetu Tomkinson, 29, for the first time as she walked into the pub where he was working at.
Despite the age gap, Rich and Evie couldn’t deny their strong feelings for each other. They decided to move in together in February 2019, and by September of that year, Rich had popped the question.
The unexpected twist came when Rich finally met Evie’s mother.
When Rich first met Evie’s mother, Sarah Owen, 53, he was shocked to discover that they had already met in the 90s while working on the same street. It meant that Rich must have seen Evie as a baby, being pushed around in a pram by her mother.
“It was a bit freaky when I realized I’d met Evie as a baby, but I had no idea at the time,” said Rich, who works as a surveyor. “We just laugh about it.”
For Evie, who works as a social worker, it was an “odd” feeling when they figured out Rich had met her as a baby, But it doesn’t seem to have any impact on her deep feelings for her husband. “He’s so fun and has the biggest heart,” she said.
Rich popped the question at a charity event.
It was when Evie was away that Rich realized he had feelings for her, expressing to her how much he missed her, only to find that she felt the same way.
Rich made a memorable proposal to Evie at a charity event he put on in March 2019 in front of a packed theater of 1,000 people during the screening of a documentary.
As expected, Evie didn’t hesitate to say yes.

Rich and Evie became husband and wife in July 2022, but their journey toward tying the knot was full of hardships.
“My dad was diagnosed with cancer in October 2018 and passed away at Christmas, and Evie stuck by me,” Rich said.
Due to Covid restrictions, Rich and Evie postponed their original wedding plans for June 2021 and then faced a heart-wrenching loss as Evie’s dad, Martyn Locke, suddenly passed away the following month, leaving her unable to imagine tying the knot without him by her side.
Rich suffered another loss in October 2021 when his 76-year-old mother, Nicole Tomkinson, passed away.
The couple, having faced a trying few months, rearranged their wedding to July 2022 and decided to celebrate with a private ceremony, then a lively party with 200 guests at a friend’s field.
“We had a wedding dance off and so much fun,” said Rich, who referred to it as the “best day.”
Their age gap was sometimes a source of problems when they got mistaken for a father and daughter.
Although their families have always been supportive of their relationship, Rich and Evie have encountered instances where people mistake them as father and daughter.
But despite Rich saying that “age is just a number” for them, they can easily be mistaken for a father and daughter.
“I’ve been mistaken for Evie’s dad before, but most people can see how well we click. The 19-year age gap doesn’t bother us at all,” Rich continued.
“Marrying Evie was the best day of my life, and I’m so excited to have a baby with her.”
When a woman once asked Evie if she was with her dad, she was in shock to learn that he was actually her boyfriend then, but the woman “wasn’t malicious,” according to Evie.
Despite Rich’s age, the couple did not let it hinder their dream of starting a family.
The lovebirds were expecting a baby in May 2022 after “trying for a few months” and are likely to be parents by now. Evie seemed thrilled about this new experience and optimistic about her husband’s parenting skills. “He’s going to be a great father,” Evie said.
“I was worried it might be hard to get pregnant because of Rich’s age,” she added. “Rich sobbed his eyes out.”
The couple is now eager to explore the world in their refurbished van and create new memories as a family.
The moral of the story is that you never know where you might meet your future spouse, even as a baby. Age, after all, is just a number.
