Top medical schools in North Carolina were accused of treating transgender toddlers in an “investigation” initially published by Education First Alliance. The accusations sparked fury and outrage online, prompting responses from all listed universities, Duke, The University of North Carolina, and East Carolina University.
Universities were accused of treating “transgender toddlers”
Education First Alliance said that The University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill, East Carolina University, and Duke University offer transitioning to toddlers aged two, three, and four.
Duke University’s clinic
In 2015, Duke University opened the “Child and Adolescent Gender Care Clinic” to treat children two years and older who suffer from gender dysphoria, Education First Alliance alleged.
Duke denied the allegations
The Duke School of Medicine officials said: “Online misinformation about toddlers starting gender transitions at Duke is false.” The statement further said, “Care decisions are made by patients, families, and their providers and are both age-appropriate and adherent to national and international guidelines.”
Another statement was concise
Duke School of Medicine said: “Online misinformation about toddlers starting gender transitions at Duke is false.”
The University of North Carolina (UNC) clinic
According to Education First Alliance allegations, this university works with children three years and older. Allegedly, the University of North Carolina provides sex change therapies for minors aged three to 11.
The psychiatric facility can only offer an opinion
Newsweek reported that the UNC Health webpage was taken down, but an archived version said it took “undergoing or exploring all forms of gender-affirming care” from 4 to 30 years of age. However, as a psychiatric clinic, they can only give “treatment recommendations.”
Allegations against East Carolina University
Dr. Colby Dendy, clinical assistant professor of internal medicine and pediatrics at East Carolina University Brody School of Medicine, allegedly said that treatments are for “people of all ages,” adding they should be part of the primary care.
ECU spokesperson issued a clarification
In a statement, the University said, “Gender-affirming primary care includes important services like mental health care, nutrition, and social work, all aimed at ensuring LGTBQ+ patients and their guardians have access to the care, information, and resources required to make decisions that fit their unique needs.” ECU added in a statement that “the comments and opinions of employees, including those published, in any organization do not necessarily reflect policies or services provided by that organization.”
ECU Health speaks up
A person from ECU Health spoke to Newsweek, telling the publication: “ECU Health does not offer gender-affirming surgery to minors nor does the health system offer gender-affirming transition care to toddlers.”
Dr. Deanna Adkins’ testimony
Dr. Deanna Adkins, a founder of the Duke Center for Child and Adolescent Gender Care, was called out by Education First Alliance for allegedly saying she had transgender children as young as two.
This was part of a court case
Dr. Adkins was an expert witness in the 2020 case, and she said, “Before puberty, treatment does not include any drug or surgical intervention. For this group of patients, treatment is limited to ‘social transition,’ which means allowing a transgender child to live and be socially recognized in accordance with their gender identity.”
Promoting Youth Protection Act
In the age of misinformation, it is essential to check where the information is coming from. Education First Alliance left a comment for people to support Youth Protection Act, a bill approved by state House Republicans. The bill refers to minors but does not mention toddlers.
