House Republican’s mental gymnastics over Trump’s support for Russia: “I think what he’s thinking is…”

Michael McCaul, the House Foreign Affairs Committee chairman from Texas, gave an interview where he was asked if Trump wants Russia to take over Ukraine. But, instead of answering, McCaul was in knots, repeating what Trump had already said during a CNN town hall interview.

Speaking to Kaitlan Collins on CNN, Trump did not express support for Ukraine but said, “I don’t think in terms of winning and losing. I think in terms of getting it settled, so we stop killing these people.”

Without taking sides, Trump continued, saying, “I want everybody to stop dying.” Of course, that earned him a round of applause.

ABC News’ Jon Karl interviewed McCaul. During the interview, the two watched this part of CNN’s event, and the host asked the House Foreign Affairs Committee chairman, and Karl asked, “What do you say to that?”

ABC News journalist expanded his question, “He’s your Republican frontrunner right now, and he can’t say whether or not he wants Ukraine to win against Russian aggression.”

McCaul started explaining that Trump “always thinks in terms of winning and losing.” He then added, “I will say this, I think what he is thinking is that this counteroffensive, which happening soon, will be so successful we can have a ceasefire and get to a negotiating phase.”

In March, Trump said that if he got elected in 2024, “I will have the disastrous war between Russia and Ukraine settled.” He added that if he were POTUS, “It would never have happened.”

The Daily Beast reported that during a radio interview with Fox News host and confidant Sean Hannity, the twice-impeached former president revealed how he would have prevented the war. According to Trump, all he needed to do was let Russia “take over” parts of Ukraine.

He congratulated himself

During the same interview, he shared, “That’s without even negotiating a deal. I could have negotiated. At worst, I could’ve made a deal to take over something, there are certain areas that are Russian-speaking areas, frankly, but you could’ve worked a deal.”

Blame it on Biden

In February, Trump talked to Right Side Broadcasting Network Brian Glenn. Trump said about the war, “It would have never started had I been president. There was no chance of this war starting. And frankly, I don’t think Putin wanted to do it.”

Trump declared, “As soon as I was out… they started putting soldiers on the border. But even then, he didn’t want to do it. He wanted to get a piece. Now it looks like he’ll end up probably getting the whole thing, but I’ve never seen anything like it.”

Was Putin forced?

Trump concluded, “I think he was sort of forced in by the statements being made by Biden. And it’s something so sad to say because no matter what happens now, it can never be like it could have been with nobody dead and with no cities demolished.”

McCaul expressed personal views

Talking to ABC, the Texas Republicans further shared, “Do I want Ukraine to win? Of course. That’s why wanted the administration to put everything they had into this conflict so they could win.”
