South Dakota Governor Kristi Noem spoke at the NRA-ILA Leadership Forum in Indiana. She shared that her granddaughter, who is only two, already owns weapons, sparking fury.
Noem was the first speaker, and everything went downhill

Before people heard about almost two-year-olds with guns, they heard Noem talk about diversity. She addressed the audience, “I probably don’t look like a traditional NRA member. The media would have us believe that the NRA has only made up of old white guys and all you old white guys can be proud and raise your hands.”
Diversity talk

Noem added, “But there’s a lot of other people and diversity within the NRA.” However, the vast majority of the crowd were old, white males, which made social media users chuckle.
Little Miss Addie has a shotgun and a rifle

The proud grandma said her granddaughter, Little Miss Addie, “already has a shotgun, and she already has a rifle, and she’s got a little pony named Sparkles too. So the girl is set up.”
So much joy

The Republican Governor added how her granddaughter and “Branch, who’s just a few months old, they have brought us so much joy. They’ve brought us purpose.”
Social media users were not amused

Noem signed an executive order to “further protect the 2nd Amendment rights of South Dakotans.” NRA CEO Wayne LaPierre joined her on stage, but most people did not notice what had happened after Noem shared that her grandchild is a gun owner.
Some were furious

One person wrote, “What is the phone number for South Dakota’s Child Welfare Services? Someone needs to report this child neglect.” Another tweeted, “Absolutely sickening. How the hell is this real life in America?”
More people joined

The speech went viral after The Recount posted it. It gathered several thousand, mostly negative comments. One Twitter user shared, “A 2-year-old who pulled the trigger on a shotgun he or she was holding to their shoulder would be knocked down and likely injured.”
Some called it gun fetishizing

Another chimed in, “These gun fetishizers are out of their minds. They act like guns aren’t even dangerous to just give a 2-year-old, yet they need an AK-47 to go to the drug store. No 2-year-old needs or should have a rifle.”
People were left with many questions

Someone tweeted, “Help me understand … a 2-year-old would do with a shotgun and a rifle? I realize it was probably a gift from someone, but… wouldn’t a cute new outfit be more beneficial?” Another person just wondered, “This can’t be real?!? What?!!?”
A grandparent’s insight

A grandparent shared things they were doing for their grandchild, leaving with a question, “WOW. My 2-year-old grandson has puzzles, books, musical instruments, hot wheels, cars, and jumps off couches. Where have I gone wrong?”
Mike Pence was there as well

Former Vice President Mike Pence was booed when he appeared on the stage, which was ironic considering he was in his home state.
Despite the booing, there was love

Someone shouted, “I love you, Mike,” and Trump’s VP shouted back, “I love you too.” That’s something, considering all the booing.
