A teacher was fired after giving half of her class zeros since that’s how many hours they spent doing an assignment. Instead of teaching them a lesson, a history teacher to 8th graders was fired.
No Zeros policy
The teacher Diane Tirado, who worked at St. Lucie County, Florida, shared that she gave students two weeks to finish their homework.
No work, no grade
After several students failed to deliver their projects, Tirado learned about the school’s “No Zeros” policy from the administrators.
This did not sit well with the teacher
Tirado asked, “What if they don’t turn anything in?” She learned that children still get 50 percent, which she did not like.
The teacher got fired
Tirado was still on a probationary period, so the letter from the school’s principal did not go into details. She was merely told to pack her things, but Tirado left something for the kids.
She left a message for her former students
On a whiteboard, the teacher wrote, “Bye Kids, Mrs. Tirado loves you and wishes you the best in life! I have been fired for refusing to give you 50% for not handing anything in. Mrs. Tirado”
The message went viral across social media
The teacher shared the message on Facebook, and it soon spread across social media. Talking to the local media, the teacher explained, “I’m so upset because we have a nation of kids that expect to get paid and live their life just for showing up, and it’s not real.”
The teacher still believes in education
Mrs. Tirado shared that teaching was her calling, and despite her bad luck at West Gate School, she hopes to make a change. She stated, “A grade in Mrs. Tirado’s class is earned.”
The school later denied that zeros were the reason the teacher was fired
The school issued a statement to WPTV: “Tirado was released from her duties as an instructor because her performance was deemed sub-standard and her interactions with students, staff, and parents lacked professionalism and created a toxic culture on the school’s campus.”
The statement came after the teacher shook the educational system
Though this story goes back to 2018, it shows that one person can shake up the educational system. Talking to the NY Post, Mrs. Tirado said, “I loudly bucked the system,” adding, “I refused to do their policy. I guess you would call that defiance.”
Tirado shared updates on Facebook
On her page, the teacher wrote, “Teaching should not be this hard. Teachers teach content, children do the assignments to the best of their ability, and teachers grade that work based on a grading scale that has been around a very long time.”
Tirado pointed out that she wants students to succeed
The teacher added, “By nature, most teachers are loving souls who want to see students succeed. We do above and beyond actual teaching to give them the support they need. Are we perfect? NO. We make mistakes like all other human beings, but I know teachers work their butts off to help children to be the best people they can be!”
