In a Wall Street Journal op-ed, Romney touched on 2012 GOP primary candidates, writing, “There are incentives for no-hope candidates to overstay their prospects. Coming in behind first place may grease another run in four years or have a market value of its own: Mike Huckabee and Rick Santorum got paying gigs.”

He added, “As former New Hampshire Gov. John H. Sununu has observed, ‘It is fun running for president if you know you cannot win.”

The Senator drew conclusions from his experiences

He continued, “Left to their own inclinations, expect several of the contenders to stay in the race for a long time.” Romney added, “They will split the non-Trump vote, giving him the prize. A plurality is all that is needed for winner-take-all primaries.”

Romney talked to the donors, saying, “Donors may think that party leaders can narrow the field. Not so. Candidates don’t listen to party officials because voters don’t listen to them either.”

Romney was the presidential hopeful in 2008 and 2012. He stated, “The last people who would ever encourage a candidate to withdraw are the campaign staff and consultants who want to keep their jobs for as long as possible.”

Romeny elaborated, “Republican mega-donors and influencers – large and small – are going to have to do something they didn’t do in 2016: get candidates they support to agree to withdraw if and when their paths to the nomination are effectively closed.”

Finally, the Utah Republican said, “Our party and our country need a nominee with character, driven by something greater than revenge and ego, preferably from the next generation.”

The long-time Republican concluded, “Family, friends, and campaign donors are the only people who can get a lost-cause candidate to exit the race.”

The former president went to Truth Social

Trump asked and answered, “Who is a worse Senator, John ‘The Stiff’ Cornyn of Texas, or Mitt ‘The Loser’ Romney of Massachusetts (Utah?)?” The 45th president wrote on Truth Social, adding, “They are both weak, ineffective, and very bad for the Republican Party and our Nation.”

The twice impeached and four times indicted former president continued, “With even modestly skilled opposition, they’ll lose their next Election. Who could ever forget Mitt proudly marching, with full mask, down a once proud Washington, D.C. street with BLM and Rioters? Likewise, there’s Cornyn, always quick to surrender to the Dems, giving them anything they want?”

Senator John Cornyn said in May to Texas reporters, “We need to come up with an alternative. I think President Trump’s time has passed him by, and what’s the most important thing to me is we have a candidate who can actually win.”
