DeSantis’s campaign manager, Christina Pushaw, tweeted an emoji of a waving hand upon learning that LGBTQ+ families are leaving Florida due to the so-called “Don’t Say Gay” bill.
Pushaw was already blocked on Twitter
Pushaw is one of the most critical people in DeSantis’ reelection and no stranger to controversies. She was suspended for, as A.P. reported, making “a direct effort to activate an online mob to attack a journalist.”
LGBTQ+ families are ready to leave Florida
Florida’s Voice conducted a poll, saying that the “majority of “queer parents” consider leaving Florida because of the law barring sexual orientation/gender identity instruction in K-3.”
Pushaw retweeted the news with a waving hand
Before the emoji, Pushaw said, “Most people, gay or straight, oppose the idea of classroom instruction for young children about sexuality and “gender” ideology. Those who don’t should move to California.”
She later shared DeSantis’ statement
Pushaw, born in California, posted a clip of DeSantis, saying, “DeSantis gets it: “Gender ideology has no place in our K-12 school system.”
She did not stop there
In another tweet, Pushaw shared another DeSantis quote, “We do not allow teachers to lie to students by saying they may have been born in the wrong body…”
Her wave went viral
Pushaw’s reaction to the news that many LGBTQ parents are considering relocating or leaving Florida made her one of the most talked about people on social media. However, most of the comments were not pleasant.

One person replied to Pushaw, “Your bigotry is showing.” Another asked, “Why would you cheer people wanting to leave the state?” The third said, “My family, including my six-year-old granddaughter, are participating in the pride parade in Miami Beach. And no, we are not queer.
Some were supportive of the hand emoji
Someone shared, “I’m okay with that, good luck in N.Y.” Another wrote, “The strangest thing is why do the kids of needed this instruction, anyways? They already get it at home!”
Reddit also commented
Someone pointed out, “Doctors and teachers are leaving en masse, too.” Another wrote, “She is the face of extreme hate. Most countries would recognize it as a crime against humanity but not in Florida.”
Many people were furious
One said, “These people have no consistent values they can unite their base around, so they lash out at marginalized groups as a cheap and easy way to rally their ignorant troops to help them hold onto power. It’s a page out of the fascist playbook.”

Next, they will drive out any minorities who are able to move away.
Finally, when everything is just white, they’ll drown due to the climate change they don’t believe in.”
Some kept it simple
Someone shared, “Anyone who supports DeSantis is a bad person.” Another added, “The cruelty is the point.” The third also kept it short, “Next up, laws banning Mosques and Synagogues or at least restricting them.”
DeSantis’ trip to D.C was not a sucess
The Florida governor did not have the best time in D.C. Politico claims that “several members of his state’s congressional delegation announced support” for Donald Trump’s White House comeback bid.
Meanwhile, a person shared a personal experience
One Reddit poster shared, “We are an LGBT family being forced to move. It’s really sad leaving our family behind. It scares me that if he gets to be president, there will be nowhere for us to move to unless we leave the country.” It begs the question, what would the US look like under DeSantis?
