“Do you find my outfit offensive?”: Students vs. Mexicans

Will Witt interviewed students while wearing stereotypical Mexican clothes to learn more about their cultural appropriation stands. Then he went to Olvera street to ask the same question, “Do you find my outfit offensive?”

Witt is an author and political commentator who works for the conservative non-profit organization PragerU. The video was shared on TikTok under the handle prageru_interview.

The video, widely known as Students vs. Mexicans, went viral on various social media due to inconsistencies in responses. UCLA students called out Witt for cultural appropriation. Many claimed that it was “not your culture” or accused him of not knowing what Mexican culture means.

He then went to Olvera street to meet some Hispanic community members. No one complained though all people included were older men.

The video then turns back to the campus, where Witt found a Mexican student who was also not offended by his clothing choices.

Since this is an edited version, it is up to you to decide if things were as black and white as presented.

TikTok users expressed their feelings, with one person saying, “Nobody in Mexico even actually dresses like this, so why is everyone crying about it.”

Another shared, “People need to stop getting offended on behalf of others.”

A Mexican TikTok user said, “I’m Mexican and like it when other cultures enjoy our culture.”

Another joked, “I’m Mexican, and I’m offended that I don’t have that outfit.”

This is different from how the Reddit community reacted. Many agreed that people get too offended these days, but others had different ideas.

One Reddit user wrote, “Interesting that he compared young American people and older Mexican people’s viewpoints.”

Another replied, “It would be even more interesting if he didn’t cherry-pick the reactions that supported his point while leaving out the ones that didn’t.”

This poster had a different point of view, “I don’t find this cultural appropriation, or offensive or whatever. What I do find offensive are people not of my culture trying to tell me and others what should offend me. Cultures are for sharing!”

While another chimed in, “Regardless of the outfit itself being offensive or not, the reason he’s doing it is, he’s parading out to attempt to ‘own the libs’ there’s no genuine appreciation of the culture, he’s just trying to be a d**k.”

What do you think? Was this proof that people are taking cultural appropriation too far? Or was it edited to fit Witt and his views?
