“Disgusting,” “dehumanizing,” and “utterly evil:” The Biden campaign comments on DeSantis’ slavery curriculum in Florida

President Biden’s campaign blasted DeSantis’ over controversial Black History standards, a curriculum that suggested that some slaves “benefited” from slavery.

Biden campaign co-chair Cedric Richmond said, “Here’s what’d I say: I think Ron DeSantis needs another campaign reset already if he wants any shot at resonating with mainstream voters.”

Richmond added, “His comments in support of the idea that slavery had its benefits for slaves are obviously disgusting, but they’re also a symptom of the extremism that’s infected the Republican candidates running for president.”

No debates over slavery

Richmond continued, “There’s no debate over slavery. It was utterly evil with zero redeeming qualities. Not a single Republican candidate has condemned this effort to rewrite history. Not a single Republican candidate has any business running this country.”

Vice President Kamala Harris voiced her opinion

Harris also spoke about the curriculum, “They insult us in an attempt to gaslight us, and we will not have it.” Harris also said DeSantis’ Republicans are “pushing propaganda on our children.” While in Jacksonville, the VP talked for over 20 minutes against DeSantis’ claims, and he fired back on Twitter, writing that Democrats like Harris are lying “about Florida’s educational standards.”

The VP continued, “Come on — adults know what slavery really involved. It involved rape. It involved torture. It involved taking a baby from its mother. It involved some of the worst examples of depriving people of humanity in our world. How is it that anyone could suggest that in the midst of these atrocities, that there was any benefit to being subjected to this level of dehumanization?”

While in Utah, the Florida Governor and GOP’s president hopeful said how t the Florida Board of Education “got a lot of scholars together to do a lot of standards and a lot of different things,” creating what he called “the most robust standards in African American history probably anywhere in the country.”

DeSantis elaborated, “I think what they’re doing is I think that they’re probably going to show some of the folks that eventually parlayed, you know, being a blacksmith into doing things later in life,” he said about the new curriculum, which was met with a fierce backlash.

People are not happy

On Reddit, one person asked, “Can black students complain that this makes them uncomfortable, or does that new Florida law only work for white students when being taught about the history of discrimination.”

Chilling allegations

Another warned, “In Oklahoma, Republicans are trying to remove references to race as the cause of the Tulsa Race Massacre.”

Someone wrote, “This is an obscenity – it almost looks like there is a GOP faction that would bring slavery back if they could.”

Speaking from experience

Another shared, “My wife is an editor of textbooks. She was literally told by the unelected private body that makes up the Texas textbook approval board that she had to mention the positive and negative of all historical events, and then they brought up slavery. She’s Black.”

A Republican representative spoke up

“Unfortunately, it has to be said — slavery wasn’t a jobs program that taught beneficial skills. It was literally dehumanizing and subjugated people as property because they lacked any rights or freedoms,” said Will Hurd, a Republican representative from Texas. Florida’s Board of Education unanimously backed new standards.
