“They don’t want to say out loud why they don’t like it”: Conservative Author Failing to Define “WOKE”

Bethany Mandel made waves after trying but failed to answer what she considered woke. The conservative author, commentator, and the mom-of-five predicted the clip would go viral.

Mandel complained that the protestors destroyed her book launch in NYC. The book, titled “Stolen Youth: How Radicals Are Erasing Innocence and Indoctrinating a Generation,” was co-written with Karol Markowicz.

Mandel expressed that the woke crowds were to blame and then addressed the issue with Briahna Joy Gray on On The Hill’s web series “Rising.” When Gray politely asked her to define “wokeness,” Mandel failed miserably, and the clip surpassed two million views.

Mandel Wrote A Book Against Wokeness

Gray wanted to know what woke meant to Mandel. During her 15 seconds of explaining the term, or not explaining it, Mandel said it was hard to explain and that there is a chapter in her book dedicated solely to the term “woke.” When Mandel froze, Gray simply said, “You can take your time.”

Funnily enough, in the dictionary, woke means being “aware of and actively attentive to important societal facts and issues.” Another provided definition only says “politically liberal.”

The amusing clip made a day for many Twitter users, as one person wrote, “This is the best thing on the internet today. Thanks for the loud belly laugh I just had.”

Another suggested, “This needs to happen every time these idiots say “woke.” She couldn’t explain it because they don’t know!”

The third chimed in, “Someone needs to wake her up!”

Social Media Users Were Also Amused

The Reddit community also loved this exchange, as one comment read, “You wrote a whole chapter defining it, and you can’t articulate it in an interview?!”

Another shared, “It’s well known that if you can’t explain something to someone in simple terms, then you don’t understand it yourself. This video is a prime example of that theory being proven correct.”

One Reddit user explained the term, “I disagree that they don’t understand what ‘woke’ is. It’s that they don’t want to say out loud why they don’t like it. Being woke is being aware of systemic and oppressive bigotry; basically, it’s about exhibiting empathy. Being woke doesn’t even mean that you necessarily agree with it, just that you rise from ignorance (or, in this case, outright lying) and recognize (or admit) the prejudice that pervades our society.”

Mandel Walked Into A Self-Made Trap

Another fascinating thing happened before this glitch. Mandel talked and kept repeating the term, as she stated, “There are a lot of things that are sort of a right versus left conversation. This is not one of them. I think there are a lot of people for whom this argument resonates, and it is not just a right-left issue.”

“We hope that parents of all political stripes will pick up the book. This is sort of a woke reimagining that is very, very, very far left.”

“Only 7% of Americans consider themselves very liberal, and probably fewer of them consider themselves to be woke.”

Thus, Gray had to ask her what she meant when she used the term “woke.”

Not The First Or The Last Person To Fail To Define A Word

Back on Reddit, people made great jokes, “Can someone who knows Morse code get a read on how much she is blinking…”

Another shared, “She managed to reach the opposite conclusion than she should have. Damn, those leftists and their efforts to feed and educate poor people!”

Congressman Mark Takano spoke about this exact issue not long ago. He tweeted, “To my Republican colleague – when I was a high school teacher, I always advised my students to know the definition of words before using them.”
