San Francisco’s Guaranteed Income for Trans People (GIFT) program reportedly prioritizes Black and Latinx people, causing outrage among the community.
GIFT was launched in 2022
San Francisco’s mayor London Breed, announced last year that the program aims to provide 55 eligible residents with $1,200 per month for up to 18 months to “help address financial insecurity.”
Trans people experience poverty more than other groups
Compared to the general population, trans people experience poverty 33% vs. 12%. The program announced that it would prioritize Black, Indigenous, or Latinx applicants.
New documents confirmed that
Judicial Watch gathered thousands of pages regarding the program. One allegedly says, “The program will prioritize enrollment and retention of BIPOC [Black, Indigenous People of Color] trans and nonbinary people who also engage in survival sex trades, living with disabilities, elders, living with HIV/AIDS, undocumented, monolingual Spanish speakers, formerly incarcerated, and unhoused and marginally housed.”
“Leftist policies”
Judicial Watch President Tom Fitton issued a statement, “These disturbing new documents confirm how, among other leftist extremist policies, San Francisco is abusing tax dollars to give cash to individuals based on race and transgender quotas.”
Other revelations
The documents reveal that the program allegedly assists “gender-affirming primary medical and holistic care,” mental health services, and “gynecological and sexual health care.”
Over 60 percent are BIPOC people
The documents obtained by the conservative group allege that among 55 participants, 66% are BIPOC, or Black, Indigenous People of Color, and “at least 30% Black Trans Women and at least 20% Latinx Trans Women.”
Mayor London Breed talked about trans community
In 2022, Breed told Axios, “We know that our trans communities experience much higher rates of poverty and discrimination, so this program will target support to lift individuals in this community up.” The programs do not sit well with conservatives, especially in the last year when attacks against LGBTQ+ individuals led to a vast number of anti-LGBTQ bills.
Similar programs started in other cities
While some cities are still in the early stages, Palm Springs already started a similar program last year. In other countries, this program did not prove to be a success, though the results from the States are still limited.
Two other pilot programs
KTLA announced in late 2022 that the city was planning two more pioneer projects. Breed said, “Our Guaranteed Income Programs allow us to help our residents when they need it most as part of our city’s economic recovery and our commitment to creating a more just city for all.”
San Francisco Office of Transgender Initiatives commented
Pau Crego, executive director of the San Francisco Office of Transgender Initiatives commented, “Even with our rich history of trans advocacy, we see that trans San Franciscans experience poverty at exponentially higher rates compared to the general population.”
The Abundant Birth Project
One pilot project is the Abundant Birth Project, which offers basic income for Black and Pacific Islander mothers and pregnant people during and after pregnancy.
Guaranteed Income Pilot for Artists
A pilot program provides San Francisco artists with a monthly allowance, and it has entered its second round, with 60 qualified artists receiving $1,000 a month over 18 months.
