A woman has turned to the AITA subreddit to ask the internet if she was wrong to let her brother’s kids go hungry because they didn’t like the food that she makes.
Brother Travels A Lot, So His Kids Tend To Stay With Aunt Often
The post starts off with the OP (aunt) explaining that her brother started a job that will need him to travel for up to a few weeks at a time. He is widowed with two kids, so he relies on his sister to watch them when his work requires him to travel out of town so that they can continue to go to school every day.
Working From Home
Also, the OP lives really close to her brother and works from home, making her an even more convenient option for her brother. She also admits she doesn’t mind watching the kids while he is away.
OP Has Autism And Requires For Things To Be Set A “Certain Way”
She continues the post by explaining that she’s on the autism spectrum and has ADHD. This requires the OP to have things set in a certain way, or otherwise, things could “fall apart.” That means planning her meals for up to 3 weeks at a time.
Letting The Kids Skip Lunch And Dinner
“The issue I bring up is that I basically let the kids skip lunch and dinner since they didn’t like what I made on our first day together,” she wrote, “I didn’t get angry at them or anything I just told them they didn’t have to eat if they didn’t want to so they went and played on their tablets both times.”
Reheating Saved Dinners
The kids got really hungry around 10 pm, so the OP decided to reheat the saved dinners they chose not to eat earlier.
Second Day
“They picked at it a bit,” she continued, “The second day same thing happened, but they ate all of the lunch I made. “
Children Getting Used to The Food
After this, the children got used to the OP’s cooking and ate whatever she made, besides a few things they simply didn’t like.
When OP Told Her Brother That The Kids Went Hungry Because They Wouldn’t Eat Her Food, He Called Her An AH
When the OP’s brother returned, she told him he should let her buy the kids fast food so they don’t go hungry while they stay at her house.
She explained what she meant, and her brother got “pretty mad” and called her an a…hole for letting his kids go hungry.
Reddit Users Dismayed At How She Handled The Situation
The OP turned to the subreddit, hoping to feel vindicated but got the opposite response. Many Redditors were upset with the OP’s way of handling things and were even enraged at the fact that she expressed no sympathy for the kids having preferences when it came to food.
Not Understanding Picky Eating
“But, like, it doesn’t sound like OP will just eat whatever is put in front of them. It’s kind of odd that OP doesn’t understand picky eating when they literally have to eat certain things on certain days,” one person wrote.
One User Stated That There Should Be a Self-Serve Option
Another added, “The f…d up part is it doesn’t sound like there was a self-serve option. Don’t like pumpkin, have some baby carrots. Don’t want X for dinner, go make a pB&j or make a bowl of cereal. That’s pretty reasonable for kids and a minor inconvenience for OP.”
